Kill the brush! OK, Curly's hair is getting longer now and needs to be brushed daily but every time I brush her, she tries to kill the brush. She bites and screams and growls, acts like I'm trying to kill her! I try to be gentle and not pull if she has a tangle but even when it's smooth sailing down her back she's having fits! I don't even want to think about trying to cut her hair the way she flips out. Do any of you know how to make this easier and enjoyable for her? Any certain brush you use or anything??? Right now I use one of those "slicker" brushes. |
:goodpost:I wish I knew the answer, but I don't. Prince does the same thing. |
Macy used to take the brush and run off with it. She hid it several times, and gnawed off part of the handle too. she hated it! Shes pretty good now though. She sees me with the brush and jumps in my lap and closes her eyes, because she knows the conditioner spray is coming! :p We start off with a comb for tangles. Then brush. Lots and lots of love and reinforcement helped. In the beginning, when she would sit still for me for even 30 seconds, i would give her a treat and some love. Now all she wants is the love! :) Now, if i could just find the secret to getting my toddler to let me brush HER hair without throwing a fit! |

I also try to use praise and an occasional treat to make it more enjoyable. :D |

I do give her treats every so often while I'm brushing her but it doesn't help. Today, after the fight, I mean brushing, I held the bag of YY's along with the brush in the same hand and held it all out to her. She wouldn't come near the treats hahaha. |

Check out a thread I started about the same thing "Brushing/Grooming/War Time" I think it was moved under traveling/showing/grooming. That's the only time Nozzle and I don't get along! |
Precious always liked to be brushed & still does except for her legs! This happened after she was spayed in June. I could tell they blew several veins because she had alot of prick marks!! But it is now 9 months after the fact & the poor thing will barely let me get near her legs with a brush! I can rub her legs kiss her feet etc but no brushy brushy by her legs. Of course our brush handle is all gnawed up too LOL:D. I wish I could give you some magic advice but sadly I can't. MOMMY TO PRECIOUS:aimeeyork |
I had VERY long hair as a child and when my mom brushed it I would cry sometimes, she pulled it! I imagine it is the same thing with the dogs. They are getting pulled by tangles, I would brush often and in only small amounts of time each so they learn it isn't a long hurting occurance. I would do it every day so the tangles don't get as bad as they would if you only brushed once a week. My rosie still gets moody when I wait a few days between brushings, she will actually go scrap with my other dog after a good brushing if I forget to brush her everyday. |
Momo does the same thing! He makes these cute munchkin sounds & tries to attack the brush. The only thing that's worked for me is to give him a bully stick or a kong w/a ziggie in it. Have you heard of Madan pin brushes? They're fantastic...I'm going to sell them for $16 + shipping in about 2 weeks. If you do a search on YT on Madan pin brushes, you'll read about all the praises of this great product. Please Pm me if you want me to let you know when I get them.:D |
