How early is too early for the groomer? 1 Attachment(s) I just got a Yorkie and I love him to death but his hair is just a big ball of fluff. I love puppy cuts and he's so tiny (about 4 months old) that he's still so close to the floor when he has to potty his tummy gets wet. :thumbdown So I continuously wash his belly and face too because of his tears. So I scheduled an appointment for next Wednesday for his first trip to the groomer. Is that too early? I was reading other posts and people said their first trip was at about 8 months? Help?! I did already trim his tummy back some but he's just a hair growing machine. AND he hates to be brushed out. So I'm worried he might not even give the groomer the time of day to groom him out. Advise?? |

So, do I think 4 months is too young, absolutely not as long as all his shots are current. However, I would suggest that you speak to your groomer about not keeping him so long, 2-3 hours is ample time for a puppy to be at a groomers. He's still young and needs to have access to food and water. Make sure that your groomer is good with puppies, and makes this a fun time. |
Sorry, I have no advise to give, I am new to yorkies, but I gotta say your little man is so dang cute I could just eat him up!!! What a character! |
I had my morkie puppie groomed at 4months, but make sure that he has his bordatella before you let him go. Any reputable groomer will tell you this at the time you make your appt. |

As a groomer I've had people bring me puppies that are 8 months of age and never been to a groomer.....I have to start from step one......it's a slow process and the puppy is just so panicked. It takes me about three sessions to make that puppy realize that the grooming process is the time is fun for both of us. |

Thanks so much for your advice! I do have all of his shots done already except for his last rabies shot. But our vet didn't think we should need the boardadella. Is this necessary? I think I'll call the vet today. But I definitely agree with the grooming at a young age. I tried using my groomers tools to trim his feet too and he didn't like it one bit. |
Aw thanks! He has a little under bite so he looks like he's pouting all the time. And when he gets excited he looks like he's smiling because his bottom teeth and top ones are all showing. It's adorable I love the little guy. |
Taking them to the groomer at an early age is ok, so they can get used to it. I would give Bordetella intranasal beforehand (they recommend 3 days prior) & it lasts for 6 months. Even though it only protects against 2 strings out of 8...when I went to school for grooming, they brought in a stray...so I think you should have your pets vaccinated beforehand as a precautionary measure. Your furbaby is a cutie! |

i just got prince groomed for the first time a week ago and he was 4 1/2 months.. he never had a bath before but i did brush him daily. He was a little scared but the groomer was really good with him and she let me stay with him the whole time. He did have all his shots b4 he went including the bordatella. The whole process took about an hr and i brought his water bowl so he culd drink water while he was there. She didnt do everything that she would do to an adult dog bc it was his first time and she didnt want to stress him out too much (like plucking the hair inside his ears) but all in all it was a good experience and prince looked 100% better. He was all sticky and his fur was messy lol oh yea and after his grooming i gave him a little nutracal and he napped alot wen we got home :D |
Boardatella is absolutely necessary, once a year if your dog is in a controlled environment. Twice a year if you're boarding or showing a dog. Concern with Parvo and Kennel Cough is much more important. Most if not all groomers require proof of such vaccines. |

I never cage dry pups or any other dog for that matter, they are dried and brushed out in my arms, at no time are they kenneled. I have an x-pen available, if I'm momentarily called away. |
