Puppy Cut or Let It Grow My furbaby is almost 8 mos old and needs to be groomed. Is it best to have the black puppy hair cut off and have her short all over or just let it grow? I eventually want to see if her hair grows. Also should I let the top knot hairs keep growing? If the top hairs are long and I don't want to put a band in all the time, will those hairs fall in place, out of her eyes? I want to give the groomer explicit directions. |
Since I'd like to know this answer also. As Madison is 9 mos old and goes to the groomer tuesday. Maybe it should be posted in the general discussion since it seems nobody comes down this way much??? just a thought. Madison's hair is down to her knees. and her 'feathers' on her legs are long I love the long hair on the head face and neck. and I love the feathers on the legs. if I can come to some middle ground on her torso hair I'd feel better about things. I know for sure I don't want her in a puppy cut. and she's soo good at letting me brush her and do her top knot. i will be checking this thread often I would love to hear the voices of experience speak out:cool: |
The only thing I can say I regret on Maximus first cut is, I asked for a puppy cut and they cut his hair on the top of his head short and now when it grows back it grows toward his eyes. Before his first cut, it grew nice away from his eyes. If your baby's hair grows away from their eyes, I would ask them not to mess with the top so it will keep growing that way. I have to constantly keep cutting that hair now. If you see his pic, you can see it grows towards his eyes. I can do a top knot but if I don't it's in his eyes. Other than that, the puppy cut is what we always get. In the summer, we had him shaved too. He looked like a completely different dog but I think he liked it. |
I prefer mine in full coats so I have never cut their hair until it needed trims to keep it off the floor. Pixie came tous at 13 months with her topk knot cut off and my husband loves it so we keep her without a top knot and it looks cute on her. My other 2 have topknots. Just be sure when you take your baby to the groomer that you are very specific in what you want, way to many groomers will shave down dogs. |
Shelby & Seymour have never had full haircuts....... just trims. They both have long coats. The dark hair eventually turned to a silvery blue. I am not sure about the topknot question. We always keep the hair out of their face & eyes with a band/and or bow. The tips of their ears are always trimmed which keeps the weight off their ears, allowing them to stand up pretty. We have considered getting them puppy cuts, but we just can't do it..... yet. I do LOVE to see them all clean and groomed with their long hair. It is a LOT of work..... but my hubby helps out A LOT, too. If you do cut it, it may become more cottony, which it not really easy to manage once it gets longer. |
We kept Maybellines black puppy hair until about 9 or 10 months. Her black puppy hair was so coarse that we finally had it cut down to where you could see the silver growing in and it helped tremendously. Her silver hair is just like silk and you can brush it without her fussing. Since cutting it down to the silver we have started to let it grown out. We also keep the top knot. |
I keep Ryle in a puppy cut all the time and he will be a year old in 4 days. I just think it looks so cute and its easier. |
Madison goes to the groomer tomorrow and I HAVE to make a decision on how I am going to have her trimmed. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh I started a thread asking for pictures but only one has posted. I don't want long long hair and I don't want puppy cut. but don't know how to articulate it. |

I been looking to my lil baby goes to the groomers this evening and he turned 8 months yesterday so this is his first haircut. im nervous. he has a very small pea head. I been searching for pics to take but I havent found any. |
is there any one on YT that lives near you? Maybe you could ask who they use. What kind of cut do you what? |
All I can say is I was so sorry I did not let Buddy's coat come in when he was a puppy. A friend told me the puppycut was the way to go so that is what I did. From there I started having his back shaved with the hair on his legs longer and face too. Today he is 5yrs old and I am now allowing his silky coat to come in. It has been growing since last Nov and summer is coming and I am trying so hard not to cut it again. I would love to see him in his full coat atleast once so I would suggest to you, let it grow. After it comes in, if you find it to difficult to manage, then cut it. I am sorry I didn't do that to begin with. Congratulations and good luck with you little one, |
well I am happy to report that the groomer did a great job. she took a little off the middle back which thinned the sides. I'll have to take some pictures with a camera. I took a ton with my blackberry at the park the day she was groomed hoping to post them but I'm to slow or she's to fast and I didn't get any worth posting :( all in all I am very happy. we aren't in a puppy cut. but we aren't show dog length either. somewhere in the middle which is where I wanted to be. |
I'm glad you found a good groomer that was able to understand what you wanted and did a great job for you! Good communication is the key (and a talented groomer of course). Can't wait to see pics! |
