Possible to get rid of hair mats w/o shaving? Just got a 1 year old yorkie female--she hadn't been taken care of at all. Her hair is pretty "frizzy" looking, mainly because she has little mats at the roots of a lot of her hair--does it all have to be shaved off or is there some product that would allow me to work them out? Thanks for any help !! :aimeeyork Mom to Sergeant and Bailey :aimeeyork :thumbs up |
It will take a lot of patience, you need a detangler and spray a small section and start with your finger at the root and untangle it then comb it. I use Ice on Ice, Chris Christensen Systems, Official Site, Internationally Renowned Canine Grooming Products Used By Top Show Dogs!. You could go to a pet shop and see what they recommend. If it is too badly matted, it might be eaiser to have her shaved down. Good luck. Poor baby. |
Help for mats I have found if I use reg. human hair cond. full strength on my fingers rubbed into the mat they come out fairly easily. Just a dab on each mat. Let me know if this works for you. |
There is also something called a matting comb that has a blade inbetween the teeth of the comb. You have to be careful how you use it and face the sharp part of the blade away from the body, but it will cut through mats. It's best to not get the mat wet first, this makes it worse, and Cowboy Magic is a great detangler, but human hair conditioners might work too. If there are too many, shaving is the best option, and you could leave facial hair, and topknot. |
Cornstarch works wonders to help loosen matts!! :D |

Buddy Splash by Cloud Star is amazing at getting matts out www.cloudstar.com |
I use cowboy magic for light matting, a dematting comb for alot of matting. If the matts are too close to the skin I just get them shaved. If you use a dematting comb on a matt too close to the skin it will hurt the dog its just not worth it |

I have used baby oil with really tough matts. For me it works really well:) |
