matting hello. So my baby has an appointment to get her first hair cut on March 6th. I took him in to meet the groomer and she noticed he has some matting going on, on his legs and lower thighs. She said I should get the mats out before he comes in to get groomed cause if she cant get the mats out she will have to shave him! I dont want a naked baby! Iv been working on getting the mats out (they are not bad, just at the base of the hair) but Bentley hates it and doesnt put up with it for long.... so my question is, what is the best way to get out the mats with out taking too long? |
its very tough when you have waited a long time. I like to take a small wire comb and get the mats out slowly.. it takes time, the first time your pup probably wont like it!! But just take a small comb and get the nats and and then run her over with a regular brush. At least thats what the vet told me to do.!! |
yeah i know i could get them out if he would just let me! they are just close to the skin and on his bony little legs...im afraid Ill hurt him! |
Sometimes if you add a bit of oil or heavy conditioner to the matt and then use a pin brush from there they come out easier. You can use any commercial conditioner or Neutrogina body oil works well too. Just do a little bit at a time and make sure you use lots of yummy food (think lunch meat)--for some reason food always makes them just a little more tolerant ;) |

Hi there. This is just my opinion but even if you are unable to get all the mats out I don't think your baby should be shaved. Shaving is something you should choose to do-- not be forced into. I would find another more patient groomer and maybe pay more to get the mats out. Even if it takes two sessions at the groomers. I think all the suggestions sound really good and I would try all of their ideas especially with the lunch meats and just work at it for a couple of minutes at a time. I remember my mom getting knots out of my hair when I was little and how it hurt. Besides, if you don't HAVE to have your baby groomed that day perhaps you could postpone it until the mats are out. I wish you all the luck and let us know how it turns out. :animal36 |

Yeah, cornstarch works wonders. Apply some on the mat, loosen it as much as you can w/ your fingers & while holding the part closest to the skin, brush it out w/a slicker brush. If the mat is really bad, matbreakers. PetEdge: Matbreaker Dematting Tool |
ah! cornstarch...ill have to try that! How does that de matting tool work? it actually cuts them with out loosing length? |
The matbreaker doesn't shorten the length of the coat as much as a trimming shear would or by just cutting them off. They're actually blades that rips the mats apart.:D |

The blades are actually in the middle. The tip is pointy, but won't hurt the skin. The design of the blades are kinda curved, so when you brush w/it, your wrist will turn like when you're turning a lock.:D If the mats are on his legs, then maybe it's better to just snip them off w/a blunt nosed scissor...especially if he won't stay still for long! I use the little eyebrow blunt nosed scissors on my guys. Hope that helps. |
