Clipping Nails! I saw my Yorkie Enoch's nails today after he scratched me and drew blood and figured that he was way past due for a nail clipping. This would've been the first time I had tried to clip them so it was the first time I actually thought about the fact that his nails are black and that you can't see the quick in them. Can anyone tell me how to clip his nails?! Please, he needs it done very badly for his sake and mine. Or should I just wait until I take him into the groomer and have them do it? I didn't want to do that because I don't know when I'll be able to afford it, so if anyone can tell me how to clip his nails I would be so thankful! |
Since you've never done them before you can just take the very tip off for now - it'll be less traumatic for both you and your baby the first time:D As for knowing where the quick is - I would cut just the tip off and look directly into the cut you just made - if you're nowhere near the quick it will look whitish - clip a tiny bit more till you begin to see a black dot in the middle of the whitish area, that is the quick. After practicing for a bit you will learn exactly how far into the quick you can go without making it bleed. After trimming I go over them with a Peticure grinder just to smooth the sharp edges off. yikes Well clipping black nails is esp hard. Esp if you have never done it before. I am a vet tech and I still cut to short on the quicks. You will need a good pair of nail cutters and some qucik stop (petsmart). Maybe you can find just a little groomer, or vet clinic that does nail trims, I take peanut to get his nails done for 10$ I dont even do it, he gets to mad at me :) On the picture of the nail just look for the part that starts to thickin up thats where the quick usually starts. Thank you very much for you advice. I was also wondering how I could get him to calm down, he squirms and pants like I'm killing him when I tried to do it, and I even had help and I still couldn't keep him still or calm. Is there any special way I should be doing it? Will covering his eyes help? |

You will just have to try a couple things to see what makes him comfy, but peanut acts exactly like you are saying and the scruffing and laying him on his side helps, thats why I take him in :) he gets really stressed out as well and paints and huffs and puffs, but I dont care he needs it done!! |
I think that I read somewhere where it is better to clip them right after bathing as the nail is a bit softer. Does anyone know if this is so. Also my lil one has one white nail on her back leg....could I possibly use this as a guideline as how much to cut off the other black nails???? |

I have heard about the nails being softer after a bath. Also, I have a pair of clippers I got at PetSmart that have a guide on them. They are really easy, there is a guard, and I put the nail to the guard and clip. Stewie is only 6 months so I am no where near a pro at this! Just trying to find what works best for us.
