Moulting ? My little Yorkie has lots of allergies, food ones and also things like grass which cause a lot of problems going for walks etc. We keep his itching at a minimum using piriton and he has twice weekly baths using malaseb shampoo. He also has cortavance spray which we are allowed to use if symptoms get too bad but only for 5 days at a time as it thins skin and could cause further problems. At the moment he is not itching too badly so it seems under control as much as it can be, but when brushing him yesterday we commented he seems to be losing some hair which is unusual as he has never done so before (he is 7 years old). Today he had his bath and the bath looked like it does after our retriever cross has used it (lots of lost hair). So my question is really is this normal shedding (never happened before) or do we have a problem ? |
He shouldnt be shedding so Id say there is a problem. Has your vet done a skin scrape? |
Yes he did a scrape before settling on allergies as the initial diagnosis. The allergies came on very suddenly last summer, previously I would have described him as cast iron nothing bothered him but he woke up one day scratching and nothing we did helped. The vet did a skin scrape thinking it could be mites but that came back negative. Over £600 of tests later and he came back with the diagnosis that Duncan is allergic to many many common items including dust and grass. We have him on a salmon and potato complete food (he cannot have rice or chicken/beef/lamb/pork). And he has as a treat a carrot for his breakfast and a small tin of tuna in the evening which he shares with our big Retriever cross Mollie. |
Sorry I haven't been back to update on this problem we were having but we have been trawling through loads of remedies for him and sadly only steroids have any lasting effect, so he is on one tablet every other day possibly for the rest of his life. It's sad we had to resort to steroids but it's lovely to have him back to his usually happy go lucky self with no scratching and all his hair ! |
Chipper had bad skin problems that started when he was about 8 years old. I noticed that he would get little bumps that would blister (like chicken pox) and then break and become a sore. He also all of a sudden had allergies to everything. He was put on predisone and antibiotics for the sores. He would get better and always a couple weeks later it would start again. He was on predisone all the time and the weight gain was unreal. He went from 8lbs to 14 lbs in 18 months. When he was 13 he had surgery for bladder stones and the vet noticed that there was an unusual thickening of the bladder wall. He did a biopsy and found Chipper had bladder cancer. He was gone within 6 weeks. I often wonder if the predisone didn't cause all his problems. He never had loss of hair through the years. |
I'm sorry to hear that :( We have been warned the steroids will shorten Duncan's life and he may get cushings disease but it's a risk we have to take - another 10 years scratching and unhappy or 5 as a happy little dog into mischeif - no contest really :( |
