dry coat My yorkie is 14 months old and I've been using the Coat Handler shampoo and conditioner. Her adult coat seems very dry lately in our dry winter climate. I have tried the Neutrogena body oil as others suggested but it only stays in for a few days, would like something that lasts the week until bathtime. Does anyone use the Lanolin? That's what my breeder recommended but when I went to purchase it from a supplier, they said it doesn't come out and that you had to be careful with it. I tried a spray instead but it hasn't been doing much. Is the Lanolin worth trying or does anyone have other suggestions? Thanks! |
Dry Coat Try Emu Oil spray. I have used this and found it works really well, also pe silk shampoo. |
winter is hard on them. You may want to use an oatmeal based shampoo. I tend to use one shampoo & conditioner in the winter & a different in the warmer mths. Also I like Vellus Satin Creme - used consistently it really makes a difference |
dry coat A belated thanks to both of you! I have looked around and so far have found an oatmeal shampoo in one pet store. I am still debating about using the Lanolin oil but will ask the pet store owner about the Emu oil and Satin Creme next time I go there. Quote:

memeof4 Hi! just wanted to stop by and tell you my lil Izzy has very dry skin and I too have tried all kins but today a friend brought me some Biogroom shampoo with conditioner to try have not tried it yet. Thanks for the info, it would be great to hear if you notice a difference. The oatmeal shampoo is also BioGroom, I will talk with the storeowner next time I am at the store about the lanolin shampoo vs. the oatmeal shampoo and try one of them. Quote:

hi, when my baby was 14 weeks old her skin got very dry too. I got the silks spirits oil from Chris Christensen and I love it. ALso, make sure the shampoo or conditioner you use are not drying the skin and that when you bathe her, you are rinsing enough. are you brushing everyday with a good pin brush? That's important too Make sure the food you are feeding is premium. it seems like a lot but after you establish a routine it would be easy. |

Have you though of adding something internally to help with the coat/skin problems from the inside out? Flax seed or fish oil, even a product called Linatone will definitely improve the coat and skin. Sometimes its good to treat the problem both internally and externally. :) Best of luck! |

Thanks for everyone's posts, I've been trying to continue with the Neutrogena and switched her food to the Yorkshire 28 (she was fussy so I corrected that). I tried the fish oil before, but then she stopped eating her food, so I'm hesitant to do that again. I have not heard of flax seed, do you make treats with it? I will look into the other suggestions, the pet store that I go to carries Bio-Groom and I will search the sources for the others. Thanks for your ideas, I will go to the store today! Quote:

Just to add, it's only her coat that is dry, but I wonder if it's the outcome of her fussy eating when her coat was growing?! Her new coat is a bit darker and I am hoping it will not be as dry as it grows out. Thanks agian! Quote:

Dry skin is inside problem I just saw this post from months ago. I have to agree with the flax and fish oil! All the shampoo ideas are great but it is just as much an inside problem. When I rescued all kinds of dogs and cats from the pound & streets that were very scraggly and missing hair I used an herb combination that grew back their hair back. ( alfalfa, dandelion and kelp) I used essential fatty acids EPA's like flax or fish oil. Many of the pet catalogs have the liquid EPA oils with amounts for dog's size & weight. It literally made the night/day difference with a dog that had dry skin and hair. I can let you know how to find the herb combination if you would would like to try it PM me. I have the lanolin rinse from bio groom. I have not used it yet but I heard adding olive oil)few drops) in the food helps with the dryness. |
