Urgent Problem Regarding Nail Clipping [F]I have an urgent issue that I am dealing with. Apparently, at one time, while being groomed my Yorkie got clipped very badly and won't let anyone trim is nails. I have taken him to several groomers and to the vet. I have even resorted to having him slightly sedated. Even at that, while being muzzled, it took 2 techs to hold him down and they still couldn't get all of them. I have since decided to groom him myself. The biggest problem is that I had no idea the the quick continues to grow out. I thought that it was like our cuticles and that the nail would grow, but not the quick. Now I don't know what to do. His nails are very long and the vet doesn't want to do it and I am afraid to do it myself. Does anyone have any suggestions????[/FONT] :( |
I don't have any suggestions because we are having the same problem, so I am also interested in any tips. |
Just take a little bit off of each one and hope that the quick recedes. If not, anesthesia may be required to get them short again. That's my guess at least. |
Additional Info The only thing that the vet suggested to me is to walk him on the pavement. The problem I have with that is that my mom watches him for me while I am at work. Becauce of her age and physical condition, my mom can't walk him and the one time that I can at night, just isn't going to cut it. PS Auddoc- I was feeling like I was a bad mom, so it does help to know tha I am not the only one dealing with this problem. |
Out of my 3 yorkies, Cali is the one I cannot cut her nails. I try and do one at a time and if I'm lucky I can get them all done in 10 days. I have taken her to the vets and they have done it but I really want to be able to do it myself. I am going to try and give her a special treat while I try and clip more than one nail at a time. My others 2 just sit nicely while I do it. So don't feel bad it's not you. |

solving your nail clipping nightmare Ileen, Please read the thread here on Pedipaws. I posted my story about Bella. I had the same problem and cannot believe what difference this little device has made for her. Good luck and let me know. mvatthezoo@yahoo.com Mary |
I have the same problem with a female I got at 16 months who's previous owner would quick her nails. This 7 lbs female totally freaks out if you just touch her foot. Anyway, to cut her nails it is a major battle. I usually just pick her up and walk around with her and clip her nails that way. I don't always get them all done all one time but a few here and there. I feel really sad for her. As for how short to cut them, when you look at the nails you will see where they are start curving down, you want to cut them right where the nail is starting to curve down. |

Dogs get very upset when they get their nails trimed, and the quick gets cut, because it hurts and it bleeds a lot. I would really tell you that you just need to start touching his feet, when he lets you touch them, give him treats and really praise him. I was a grooming assistant and tech for many years, and when I got fiona and attempted to trim her nails, she was a nut! With her growing up she has grown out of a lot of her trantrums, and i can finally cut her nails, however, i usually have to put all my weight on her and get them done. If he is due to get neutered or get any type of surgery done ask them to trim them while he is already under. I would really just try touching his feet and letting him get used to it first. How old is he? |
Here are some suggestions (and they have worked for me). 1. First - as a rule you can tell where the quick is because the nail is wider at that part and then narrows. 2. have someone hold a little spoon of cream cheese or peanut butter. 3. prepare ahead of time - get a nylon and put their paw through it to pull back the hair - you will want to clip as quickly as possible without having to worry about hair. 4. Clip a bit at a time to start establishing trust. 5. Lastly, and my hubby and I had to resort to this for one of our Yorkies - he would hold her and growl in her ear - showing DOMINANCE while I grabbed each foot and quickly clipped way. Again - these are suggestions only - no scientific research in them - just had Yorkies for over 20 years. *hugs* |

So I will try the nylon, because yes the hair gets in the way! And the peanut butter on a spoon. Is that just so they smell it as a distraction? |
Welcome to the Club Zeke is next to impossible to clip his nails at home and to get groomed (he's failed 3 groomers so far:D). Being a rescue at 1 yr (now 2 this Jan) we do not know much about Zeke except that he was with 17 other fosters/owners own dogs. Combing and brushing has gotten easier, actually, easier than Zack who is a joy to bathe and clip nails, the past couple of months but the feet/nails are still difficult to say the least. A lot of handling/touching Zeke's feet while playing and the combing/brushing. The time we took Zeke to a groomer and vet who were co-located, they tried sedating him, no luck, and I was out $175 from the rip off vet visit. I was charged for the vet to look at him, sedate him, then the bathe and groom. Zacks' bath was only $35. It will be slow and long but there are plenty of suggestions that I will also try. |

Thank you all Thank you all for your advice. I have tried pedi paws, to no avail, but I am going to keep trying. I may even go to the beauty supply store for a nail file and buffer. perhaps doing that first and getting him used to my working on his paws will be a good start. Thanks again. Oh, I was the original post. Had to change screen name. Ileen |
