Hmm.. I don't know if this is in the right area... couldn't decide between here and health/diet.

I cut Mahina's nails every two weeks. I've done this since I brought her home at 8 weeks. I cut them as short as possible, but her nails still touch the floor. I've heard as they get older their quicks can get longer. Thus, sometimes causing problems when they are too long.

So I was wondering if anyone has heard of vets cutting back the nails short and cauterizing them. She's supposed to get spayed tomorrow, I haven't talked to the vet about it, but I wanted to get some info from anyone who knows anything about it. I don't know if they'll even do it... but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Anyone have it done? Cost? Pros? Cons?

I have heard the same about their quicks getting longer I am not sure. I don't believe so.

yes the vet can cut them farther back and use a powder on the nail that stops the bleeding.

At home you can get the pedipaws($20) from cvs,walgreens,or walmart.It is a suped up nail file on batteries,it works great and can get the nails really low without hitting the quick.I have one and I recommend it to everyone.

I have the pediapaws too and love it. I got mine at walgreens

Is it to loud? Because I was thinking about getting one, also you can't go to deep and make them bleed? ( I'm a chicken about this as I always cut to deep)I just took them to my groomer and for 2 dogs it cost me $20.00 just to cut the nails. So this could save me some money :D Also how often do you use this?

I use it about every 4 weeks. It does have some noise to it but it doesnt bother mine. You stick the nail in the little spot and it files it down. I have never hit the quick using it. I was afraid to use it at first but it is very simple

I've used it before and I don't care for the pedipaws.
I mean I even tried it on myself and it scared me! Plus, she freaks out with just a regular nail file.
I get her nails reaallyy close and they quicks are just really long. :rolleyes:

I'll see what the vet says.

I am taking Baxter to the Vet tonight (5PM EST) and I was going to ask this question too... I will post later on tonight with what my vet says about it as well.

I was told by an ex-breeder/shower that the quick gets longer if you only ever clip your dogs nails instead of wearing them down on a hard surface (like a road). She said the only way to get the vein to retreat back up into the foot is to wear the nails down instead of clipping.

Dont know if it's true or not but something to think about I guess. :)

With regard to the Vet cautorising them, well I'm not sure, sorry! I would be worried about it hurting, I mean I know they can put this powder on the nails to stop the blood flow but will the powder also stop it from being painful to walk on? If you think about when you have a nail that is too short it hurts to touch things, doesn't it? I would've thought it'd be the same for a dog.

I've heard too that the quick gets worn down by walking. It's been raining the past week and she won't even step foot on the ground if it's wet! :rolleyes:

Well, I was thinking if I was to have them cauterized, now would be the time since she's going to be under for her spay. I could see how it might hurt her for a few days, but I don't know if it's the same for dogs in that way... Hmm. She will be on pain medicine, but I'll ask their opinion about the being too short = painful.

Yes she is. :(
I was totally fine up until 15 minutes ago. I wasn't nervous, scared, emotional. Now I'm all three! :rolleyes:
I have full trust in my vet, but she's my babes and I'm going to be worried.
I know she'll be fine. I'll update on her spay when she get's home.

I just had widget nutered and they cut his nails short and cauterized them because a week earlier he had caught one in the rug and it bleed. They told me that the quick had grown to the end of the nail and that was the only way to get his nails short again. He had no problems after the surgery. Teeth pulled, nutered and nails cut short. He forgave me and is not hindered in any way.

Good luck on the spay, it will go find and please keep us updated!

Also, we bought Prada at 7 months old, and her owners hadn't cut her nails in months, now the quick is out too far to cut without hurting her so we don't know what to do. Please let us all know what you guys find out at the vet!
