Cottony Coat Ok, my question is this. Marley..the little darlin that he is..is gorgeous in every way...cept... his coat is so cottony..that he matts easily. Every other day I groom him,( much to his horror and mine, as he hates it) I have new matts to try to get out or eventually cut out. I do not want to keep him shaved or cut short, especially in the winter. He's now 7 months old, or almost is... and I was wondering if it is possible he could grow a less cottony coat? Please say YES.......hahaha |
Isla, too, has a very cottony coat. It's compounded by the fact that her hair doesn't grow away from her eyes, but right over them so she can't she!! So in order to see her beautiful face I have to put a pony in her hair but since it's cottony it mats within the day around the band. Luckily ?? she rubs it out by the end of the day cause if I put it in too tight and it stays in longer than that it'll get knots for sure! I'm not sure if the cotton texture will change or not. I just switched Isla to the raw prey model diet and I'm kind of hoping that that will make it less snarly but I'm not going to hold my breath! ;) |
I think the diet does help as well as the shampoo . Also the grooming tools . My Suzi is not great with having her hair brushed either, however this is a must no matter what type of coat. I recently had to have her hair shaved because of the Matts. Her coat is silk on top but, cottony underneath. I have taken her in to be professional groomed just so i can learn how to handle her. Suzi is an angel for the groomer. However , a stinker for me. Offer her treats to try and calm her down and try to make the brushing as pleasant as possible. The younger they are the better it is for them to get use to daily brushing and grooming care. :aimeeyork I am now glad Suzi was shaved so we can start over on her hair and maintaining her coat. |
At 7 months, your little one doesn't have his adult coat yet, it should get a little easier as he grow up. Good food, shampoo and conditioner will for sure help too. |
Yes it will get easier around 1 year. |
I am using the silk shampoo a lot of you all spoke of. I ordered it special. He is on Wellness puppy food and gets chicken as an additive. I've never heard of the model prey food? I'm sure hoping something changes.. He is kinda ok with grooming until I get to a matt..then he fights me totally. I keep treats in my pocket to give him while trying to grooming but so far..it's not helped if I find any resistance in his coat. He is so cute tho. I do have to keep him in a top knot as well.. because otherwise he looks like mini sheep dog with Yorkie colors..hehe I pray we still have a chance for a nicer coat...otherwise I'll have to ship him off to a foreign country or the street corner....NOT! I'm so ga ga over him... there is nothing to replace him...yukky cotton coat or not..hehe |
Tyke has a cotton coat and i had to go through this til i bought Minksheen shampoo and i cut his coat just a little. I used scissors and just cut it like i do people's hair ( i'm a hairstylist) anyways i have pictures of his coat on my profile if you want to look. when i cut the puppy hair off and i didn't cut it real short either and i changed to this shampoo he doesn't get mats anymore and his coat is always soft. it's totally amazing!!! i never would have thought his coat would be like this. he's 8 monthes old. hope this might help ya out. :) |
Lucy's coat was cottony, but as she grows (she's now almost 8 months), it's changing and becoming silkier. She has been to the groomers a few times, and I've heard it said that trimming on a regular basis encourages the adult coat to grow (Don't know if that's true, but I'm sure someone on here will know). |
I know this is a totally different thread, but to answer your question earlier about the raw prey model diet, just do a search in yorkietalk or the web and it'll come up with plenty of discussions!;) |
Summerwind Protect-A-Coat Oil it's very good for cotton coat as final rinse. |
Moroccan Oil I use Moroccan Oil conditioner and leave in treatment on my yorkie and it leaves her hair soft and very silky with no oily look or feel. I also use the leave in treatment between shampoos. Helps to keep her hair tangle free and shiny. :animal36 |
Momo has cottony coat, & he hates brushing time too. The only way he'll let me groom him is to give him a ziggie in his kong. He'll sit there chewing away, & I brush him as fast as I can! If I skip a day, he'll tangle...around the arm pit area, inner thigh area, his butt. So I try to brush him once a day, sometimes if I have time, brush twice a day. His hair is pretty long now & daily brushing w/EQyss conditioning spray & a bath every 2 weeks w/Nova Pearls Conditoner is keeping him a little more manageable.:p |
