Cotton coat matting close to skin My little boy has a cotton coat and while I absolutely adore snuggling with him (he's so soft, just like a living breathing adorable teddy bear!) I have noticed that his fur is starting to mat close to his skin. I didn't notice it at first as the longer part of his hair isn't matted at all. I have tried everything I can think of but I just can't seem to get them out. I'm afraid I am hurting him. I really hate to have all his hair cut off as it is in the middle of winter and we currently have about 8 inches of snow on the ground. I own a slicker brush, a dematting comb (which helps with mats in the longer part of the hair, but not so good for getting super close to the skin), and a metal comb and have tried all kinds of detangler. Any helpful hints or suggestions? I would be most grateful!! |
i know some harnesses or clothes make mats worse. brushing them while the conditioner is on them in the bath works really well to get the mats out. Also i have started using avoderm conditioning spray and its awesome so far. |
I've heard on here that it's harder to get mats out if you get them wet. However, I used a detangler and fine toothed comb on Lilly before I got her cut down and got them out. |
maybe just wet it may be harder but not with the conditioner in. I have done this numerous times and it has help when my pups have had mats. |
I use this stuff called "The Stuff" from Petedge. It's a conditioner/detangler that you spray on the mats, and then work through. I would also suggest getting a matt-cutter comb to do the job. You should be able to get them out without having to cut the hair. |

It's a special de-matting comb that is designed to break through mats without doing too much damage. I got mine at Petedge, but they have them all over. Here is the one I have ... Aiden had to be shaved down the last time we had him groomed..over 1 month ago. I brushed him evry night routine..all my animals jump up everynight for brushing and treats. Anyhow, He had mats close to his skin, that the brush I used, just was not reaching. The groomer had me get a pin brush and matting comb. What a difference. I actually got almost all the dead hair off my longhaired cats also. It's the best thing. I too use detangling sprays that helped alot also. So my point is even if your doing it daily,if your using the wrong brush they can get matted. I was sad to have him shaved down, but actually the porker is much thinner than I thought. |
