Grooming at home. Hi, I am just starting to groom Simon and Nigel at home and am hoping for advice and suggestions from you guys. What trimmer works best on them? One speed or two speed? Does it make a difference? How do you trim the underside of a squirmy dog's paws? Simon broke his leg when he was one and now doesn't like to have his paws held or messed with. Thanks. |
I haven't done much grooming, but I've been working on handling Thor's paws (he refuses to learn "shake"). Anyway, he has gotten much more blase about me handling his paws. It was very simple. In the morning when I rub his tummy, I will gently hold his paw for a second or two, then release and praise. Nothing to stress him out too much. It made a huge difference in a short amount of time. If your honey is really scared, maybe start with just touching his paws, and then work up to holding, and then grooming. |
There is a grooming section on the forum and you may get answers to all your questions. I groom all my dogs myself but I'm certainly not a professional. I only keep one in full coat so that does make it easier |
I started grooming all of mine after I had more than 2 and the cost was too much. I just use a good shampoo and conditioner, I use Chris Christensen brush and butter comb. a slicker brush and I bought a good scissors for trimming and a small trimmer for the ears and pads. I just tell myself it is only hair and will grow back if I mess it up. I also groom them all evry night so they know the routine. Even if it's just for a few minutes to comb thru their hair or do their teeth. They learn to sit still and then they get treats. Everytime I bathe and groom them I just keep thinking of how much money I saved!!! Good luck and enjoy. |
Everyday touching. Thanks for the great suggestions, I pet them all the time, but I had forgotten the simple rule of touching them where they don't like it while doing positive touching at the same time. Also, I didn't realize there was a section devoted to grooming. I'll check that out also. |
