For those of you that groom your own dogs. After reading all of the things that can go wrong when leaving a dog with the groomer, I want to sart grooming keely myself. But that may be a problem because I can barely do my own hair..lol.. How did you learn to cut your dogs hair? What are good products for cutting fur and shaving fur? I would like for keely to have a trim bi monthly how do i make sure its even? I dont want to groom her and making a total slaughter out of it..lol. I have cut the hair around the eyes myself and it worked out great. Oh, And, the hair inside her ears need to be plucked out, what is the right way to do that? (She needs it done because she is proned to ear infections and doing this helps keep them under control) .. Any advice you can give me will be appreciated! Thanks in advance! |
i think that if you can do the area around her eyes, you should be fine with the rest of her. Maybe try trimming the fur on her legs or round her feet to start with, till you get your confidence. Thats what i did, and eventually trimmed Molly all over, just with scissors and comb. I havent dared to use the battery trimmer yet as molly is quite scared of the noise, but i am building up to it! Good luck. |
You will really need to invest in some clippers. Even if you aren't doing all over grooming...those are a must. You'll be able to keep their tummies shaved, paw pads, and their ears. I pretty much learned by trial and error. I haven't gotten too peeved at ME yet... |
Sprinkle a bit of baby powder in her ear...that'll make it easier to plunk....just pull a few out at a time. It's pretty easy...you don't have to use tweezers...it'll come out with your fingers. |
That you both for the advice :) Another question, What are the boundries for lucking the hair? Where should I stop plucking? Should I get my mom to buy special dog clippers or could I use people clippers that we already have that my dad used to use to cut his own hair? |

I have never done that, and so far, thank God, no problems. Do you mind telling me exactly what to do. Thank you, Prince's mom |
If you go to the grooming section their are stickies that have videos on how to groom and pluck the ears. I think it was Marcerella02 who did the video. She also tells what grooming supply she is using and were she got it from, i found it very informative:thumbup: |

Me either!! I'm searching all of the sites; maybe it's within one of them. |
If you read the right side of the thread posts, it tells what section the post was originally posted in. Click on one that says Groomer info and it will get you to the section where all the posts are related to grooming. |
Tanks:) |
Thank you!! |
I started cutting my yorkies hair myself after 5 dogs and not being able to afford getting them all groomed professionaly. I was really scared at first, but got the courage and believe me....they all had really bad haircuts at first. But with practice and several cuts later, I got it...well almost :) I bought mens clippers for the butt area, and for the rest of the body I use comb and scissors. Usually my husband holds them down for me while I cut. I just pull out a few hairs in the ears that I think might tickle them. Good Luck and remember...trial and error, you'll do fine. :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |

The only advice I can give is to make SURE you brush ALL the hair out completely before you ever bathe your Yorkie (or ANY dog, cat...etc) because if you bathe with matts in, they will be cemented in and in a case like that PLEASE dont attempt to shave them out, get experienced help. |
I am not sure about plucking hair from their ears because my Yorkie's ears doesn't have a lot of hair which is a good thing and I clean his ears after bath with Oticalm each time so its all good. About grooming your Yorkie yourself, well I do mine myself. Had a few horrible experiences with different groomers and I had enough so I do my own now. I started with clippers..now I just use layering scissors that were meant for human hair and Wahl moustache trimmer for light clipping and I like what I see. I started with doing a little and stop and look to see if I like what I did and go from there. |
Just remember: the hair will grow again... :) |
I ues a "peanut" from Wahl. Small easy to hold clippers for our little ones. I took Dudley to the groomers today becasue (only been 2x) i wanted a visor cut and there was no way i was doing this on my own, :cool:he had topnots prior to this, but he turned out just as cute as ever!!! |

It's really not that hard Just don't press to hard Make sure you put a clip on. It's all about trial & error & take your time. |

See if a local groomer will help you for the first few times. If you are nervous then then dog is going to know and then he will be nervous and that is how you end up cutting the dog. So becareful!! As far as the ear plucking, I put a little bit of ear powder and just pull the hair out a little bit at a time. Do this until you can see down the ear. Then you stop and clean the ears out with your ear cleaner. |
Thank you all! Is it okay to use johnsons, No more tears, hypoallergenic baby shampoo on her? A friend of mine that works in walmart, said that her vet told her that babyshampoo wont dry out her skin as much. Her vet said, that because dogs really shouldnt be bathed more then 5-6 times a year (Because it can dry out the skin) And because yorkies tend to need to be bathed very often (once every week to 10 days) that normal pet shampoo would dry it out too much, and baby shampoo wouldnt do that.. Anybody use baby shampoo on your yorkies??! |
They need pet shampoo because it is ph balanced for dogs. There are plenty of really mild shampoos that can be used. Hypoallergenic shampoos and soap free shampoos, like Oatmeal are great for using more frequently. Also make sure to use a mild conditioner or creme rinse. |

Good luck! Kiera and "Hope" |
Sue who is a member here has a great video on how to groom your Yorkie. It's 122 minutes long and she covers what you need for grooming, bath instructions, three different yorkie cuts and more. I highly recommend it. Here is a link to her profile and you could PM her if you are interested. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/mem...icket%2B2.html |
its really not that hard, just requires lots of patience. go get yourself a book about grooming or research it online. ears, around the eye, anal area, trimming feet, nails, and bath are the basics, just be real careful, do a lil bit at a time, and keep praising your pup, after a while, you will get the hang of it ;) |
For shampoo I use a product call LEA POUCH it is base out of New York!! But I love it!!!!!:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: |
