my yorkie has tangled hair, please help me! Happy is almost 2 years old and I hept him with short hair (maybe 2 inches long). This past Christmas I put him pijamas and tshirts, because of the weather, and I did not noticed that his hair was tangled. Now I have a big problem! it is so tangled that I don't now what to do. The brush hair does not work. Is it possible to use a strong conditioner? do you have suggestions? |

Some recommend something they use for their horses that works great. I forgot what it is called but it was recommended here, so hopefuly they will respond. :):D |
I would wash him then lube him up good with a very slippery conditioner like Pantene (human conditioner) and gently brush him out with the conditioner on the coat. Use a good quality pin brush if you have one, like a Chris Christensen one. The pins on cheap brushes are not polished and can seriously scratch the skin. You could also use a slicker brush but be very careful because again it could scratch the skin if you push too hard. You may not be able to get all the matts out but if you could at least brush out the back and legs you could always shave out his armpits and belly and he will still have some coat left. |
The absolutely best stuff in the world is Buddy Splash from Cloud Star www.cloudstar.com -- check around a pet store or a holistic vet may carry this product. It gets out every snarl, knot, matt - and smells wonderful & has natural ingredients Everyone I recommend it to also raves about it. Also, make sure you are using the right type of brush for a yorkie - you need a pin brush. The best brush I have used is from Chris Christensen - I have the 20mm gold pin brush - what a huge difference than using a much cheaper brand. My trick is cornstarch, plain ordinary cornstarch works better than any dog grooming product I've ever tried to get mats to slip right out. Sprinkle some over the matted area, work out the mat with your fingers first, then brush with a pin brush. This may take awhile if the matting is as bad as you make it sound, |
My Emmy is almost 3 years old. She has long silky silver fur and has never matted. About a month ago I was sick for a week and could not brush the girls. Emmy was wearing clothes. When I took her clothes off she was a total mess. I bathed her and she puffed up worse than I could imagine. I tried conditioner, detangler, etc. but she was miserable. I called our vet. The vet could not believe she looked so matted. "In all the time I have been grooming Emmy I have never seen her with a mat. Now you bring her in filled with mattes." I was so embarrassed. So was Emmy. She was in pain being brushed and combed out. We went ahead and had her shaved down but the groomer left her hair as long as she could. She looks sorta bad now because she is so skinny. Her fur is growing so we are waiting for the day when it is back to normal. |
I NEVER brush mine out. Always use a metal comb and gently comb through the mats starting at the ends and working upwards in little fingerfuls of hair. Pet stores (Petco, etc) have Detangling sprays that can be sprayed directly on the mat and worked into it before combing. If she is really bad, just do sections at a time and the let her go for awhile to rest. I do it in front of the television at night with mine sitting on my lap. It is more comforting to them. Never brush a dry dog, never try to brush out a mat. This has worked for me. Good luck. |
I have been grooming dogs for 10 years and the best thing that I use on my yorkie clients is a product call Nature's Specialties EZ Demat!! I use it on everything that is matted. It works the best when you wash the dog and put it on and brush the dog while it is wet. It is like a hot knife to butter!!!!:D:D I will also use a slicker brush from a company called Les Pooch, I like the medium bristle. But brush shoft because it can hurt the dog. It is pricy but worth it. This is just what I use. It works on all the dog. I also like the pin brush from a company called Greyhound. I haven't heard of using a slicker brush on a yorkie coat. Is this just for shorter hair? |
I don't normally use a slicker brush on yorkies only when they are very matted and the owners dose not want me to shave the coat off. I normally use my Greyhound brush on them and a good conditioner. A slicker brush can really be damaging to the coat but when the coat is already so matted and you can't get the mat's out and you don't want to shave it, then go to a slicker brush. :) It also really helps to have a stand dryer as well. That really helps to find the mat's and helps get the mat's out as while. On my own yorkies I like to use MATRIX SLEEK LOOK. I also use Paul Mitchell baby shampoo for the face.I bath my yorkies once a week to keep the matting down.:p:p:p But I am always looking for thing I can use to make my yorkies coat healthier!!:D:D |
My Yorkies mustache is crinkly and stuck together Hi Guys....I'm really struggling with Alias my 18 mth old Yorkie hair. It's pretty long, never been cut. When I bathe him I use a good shampoo and make my own conditioner from coconut oil that I reduce to liquid and then to that I squeeze in human very creamy coconut milk conditioner. I mix them together and slap it on him. I leave it on for awhile ...as long as he'll let me. I rinse him under the tap in the kitchen sink. I rinse and rinse.....So when he drys he looks ok. The ends of his coat looks a bit greasy and stringy like I never bathed him. Next day he looks greasy and homeless. His mustache is crunchy and stuck together. I wash his stash with a washcloth and warm water 2 x a day. The I comb the stash through. Within a couple of hours his stash is all nasty again. I'm super frustrated because i know he could have a gorgeous coat if I could figure out what I'm doing wrong. He eats Hill's Ideal Balance ( grain free)...he hates it so I've started mixing it with Merrick's wet food. Enough to flavour. I haven't switched to filtered water yet. I'm stuck guys.....Vic |
OMG...I had always used a slick brush .......it is bad????... If so, then what kind of brush should I use on my Yorkie babies???? |
The stuff they use on horses is called "Cowboy Magic" a tube lasts a long time cuz you only use a tiny bit and it does detangles and condition like "magic". |
