Drying Hair Straight?
 

I haven't been to the groomer yet but I called them today to see how much it would cost for just a trim since I can cut his nails and bathe him.. and they said that Yorkies have curly hair sometimes and they needed to dry it straight. Does any groomer know what they were talking about? If yes, how do I dry it straight? Thanks.

I'm not a groomer, but do groom my two and they are in long coats. I blow their hair dry in the direction of the hair shaft, just like a humans. It lays flatter/straighter and is less likely to frizz.

Back-brushing and drying the hair separates each individual hair shaft and stimulates essential oil to be brushed onto the shaft. This will reduce the tendency to mat and help keep the hair strong. I use a flat brush to separate and pull the hair straight while I dry it.

My groomer has a really nice forced air dryer that gets them dry fast and they are so soft and their hair is straight. Just a guess, but maybe they mean drying it by hand with the forced air dryer as opposed to using a cage dryer? I wouldn't let them use a cage dryer.

I used my regular hair dryer until I bought a mini forced air dryer. I like the forced air because it's warm air not hot and my hair dryer has a tendency to over heat and shut off after 10 minutes or so and I always bathe them together. But yeah, unless you want to buy a $400 K9 forced air dryer, your regular hair dryer for 1 puppy is fine :) Just keep brushing until the hair is completely dry. You'll learn through trial and error what brush works best.

They do not used caged dryers at my groomer. It's really nice (but small) and they let all the dogs wander around instead of being put in cages if they're friendly. I bet they use good shampoo but I really like Buddy Wash/Rinse and it saves money to bathe and clip the nails myself :). I will try the blow drying like you said. I'm actually a terrible blow dryer.. I just straighten my hair lol. Thank you!

Yeah I wasn't trying to say they use cage dryers, I just thought that might be the only difference or reason they would specify that?

My groomer is great too. She does both of mine at the same time while I wait. She doesn't use cages she just does one dog (or one family) at a time. Loki goes first and enjoys sniffing around when he's done :)

Try the blow dryer - you can figure it out. Since I have thick hair I have a really good dryer that blows fast air, I think I got it at Sally's for like $40 and it is great. We go to the groomer every 6 weeks but I do weekly baths and nail trims and feet trims and that sort of thing. I was terrible at first but I've gotten pretty good. You'll get the hang of it! One tip: when you dry their faces hold the dryer back at arms length so it's not full force on their face. And try to use one with a "warm" setting because hot is too hot and the cold button is too cold. My dryer has 3 heat settings and I just use the middle one :)

P.S. It doesn't have to be perfect - the dogs do not care if their hair is a little curly :) When we did baths a couple days ago I put sweatshirts on them right away so their hair is all sticking straight up now, but hey it was cold out :)
