Newby using clippers I bought a brand new pair of Oster clippers for grooming my Yorkie girl. I've had a groomer cut her in a lamb cut, short around the body. It's a couple months grown out and I need to trim it up. I used a 1/2" comb. But I'm a little confused because when I run the comb through her fur, most the time nothing is cut. The fur just slips through the comb and misses the clipper. It's not because her fur is shorter than the comb. I've tried going with the lay of the fur and against the lay of the fur. I watched the instructional video that came with the clippers and I have the blade on the shortest setting and have the comb on correctly. I had to kind of pull the fur toward the blade to get it to cut. The fur is just so fine and silky it slips out of the comb without cutting. What am I doing wrong? After going over and over it did eventually cut most of it, but it's not very even. There's still lots of longer pieces that didn't get cut. This was a $90 Oster dog-grooming clipper. I had better luck with a $20 human hair clipper I used once on her last year. How do you get it cut better? |

the comb you are using is too big.. by comb you do mean the 'attachment' snap on kind of comb right? try a shorter one, about 1/8. are the combs numbered? is the oster clipper the kind that has a blade and you can take that blade off physically... or is there some lever that adjusts how close the blade cuts. the reason her hair is slipping through is because the teeth on the comb are too big. her hair may be longer than 1/2" but its layin down flat not pooft like that of a shihtzu. a lamb cut is usually cut with a number 4 BLADE... so i am unsure what blade setting you have it on or if it came with a number ten... but adjust it to the shortest setting, and then use the smallest attachment. |
Thank you for the reply. I bought better clippers. It seems that the OsterPro clippers are not professional ones, despite the name. It did not accommodate the universal clipper blades. I bought an Oster PowerMax and a professional comb set. And if I need to I can by some different blades later on. I chose the PowerMax because it was about half the weight of the A5. I haven't tried it yet - still waiting for shipping. I did get the comb set though and they are very different from the cheap combs that came with the OsterPro set. The comb teeth are a lot closer together, stiffer, and tapered, so I'm guessing they, along with the better clipper, will work a whole lot better. |
