My puppy HATES being cleaned and groomed! My puppy hates taking a bath. He hates the hair dryer. He goes crazy when I try to brush him and tries to bite not only the brush but also me and he barks at me. He then doesn't allow me to pick him up. He has horrible tangles that make him itch and I want to help by getting them out but he won't let me. What gives? |
Well Joey didn't like it as a puppy; I had to train him to like it. There are some hair dryers that are much quieter than others, and these help, but always use it on the low setting. I gave him lots of treats while grooming, and our early sessions were short. Puppy's mat more than older dogs, and I recommend Cowboy Magic detangler for that, but some people say corn starch works well. Mats are much more difficult to get out if wet, so I used the cowboy magic before the bath, and made sure all mats were out before wetting hair. Mats hurt, and you should be slow and patient getting them out. There are certain areas that you'll learn to pay extra attention to, especially if he wears clothes. If you brush every day they are less likely to have bad mats. I use metal brushes and combs because he bit them too. Tell him no, when he does this, and praise him when he's good. Make sure water temperature isn't too hot, and always test on the inside of your arm. Error on the side of coolness because puppies can't handle water that's too hot. After bathing, I would warm a towel in the microwave and wrap him in that, and he just veggies out for a few minutes. I turn the hair dryer on and unwrap the bottom of the towel, and start drying him, at some point he gets up and rubs his body over all the towels on the counter, finally settling down, and letting me finish the drying. Groom a little each day, and make it a pleasant experience. If your puppy's hair is really bad at matting you might want to keep him in a shorter style. |
Keep in mind he's only a puppy and needs to get use to it... But also, if his fur is really matted..than you are hurting him by trying to comb it out and you need to just shave his coat down. After that be sure to stay consistant with bathing and brushing him to avoid his coat getting matted again. Just be firm with him when grooming and assert yourself as the one in charge...a few treats wouldnt hurt either ;) |
Thanks for your advice YTers. I was just so frustrated when I wrote that hehe. I really just wanted to help him because he kept itching and I'm sure it was because of the massive tangles. I was able to get most of it out or just cut it so the itching has stopped. I guess we're both still learning about each other and things.. Anyway, thanks again very much!! |
I appreciate the question and the advice too! I also assumed that Maximus didn't like baths because he was still a puppy. He gets them about twice a week. He has been scratching too, but I think maybe it is because his skin is dry from too many baths? I don't deal well with smellie dogs and his fur is so soft and pretty after he dries (doesn't last long though, lol) (sigh) I love my furbaby! |
