Making sure I have everything planned out.. I want to groom the Yorkie I might adopt myself, so I was getting more information on the clippers, etc. I have this list of things I need, and links to the one I was planning on buying. Let me know if anything is poor quality or if I need anything else. My one question is: what is the size of the cover I need? I don't know what they are called but the plasticy things you put on top of the clipper. I read 40 but I couldn't find that one for sale at pet smart in Oster. If you know what heads are good, please let me know (I prefer if it's from petsmart). 1. Pin Brush 2. Fine tooth comb 3. Shampoo, conditioner, spray conditioner 4. Scissors 5. Clippers I already have nail clippers. I am also looking for a good website that explains releasing the anal glands. I have been looking at the videos and threads on this website about grooming a Yorkie, but if you have any other suggestions they are welcome as well. Thanks, Vanessa |
the blade is usually either a 40 or a 10- honestly i dont't hink ti matters because you just put a comb on top! the comb is what determines how long the hair is- Layla's is either 11mm or 13... and i keep her hair short because it is curly. |
Ah, that clears things up. It says it's a #10, which is fine. I'm possibly looking into a kit of combs (as you say they're called). I just want to make sure I get the right size. |

also a GREAT site for grooming stuff is petedge.com everything comes at wholesale price- i get ALL of layla's grooming supplies there- remember you need clipper oil and cleaner. |
Ok, I will order it from there. I'm still confused on what length I should get. I want to be able to cut it short, but I might leave it 2-3 inches long sometimes too. I would have to experiment on what looks the best. I probably want 4 or so different comb sizes. |
Most combs only go from 1/8" up to 1". If you want to use a comb but leave a longer lengths, Laube makes a comb kit that goes form 1"-2". I personally use a #40 blade under neath my plastic combs...but that being said I recently switched to Wahl metal combs which leaves a nicer finish and I have not used my plastic combs since. With the Wahl metal combs you MUST use a #30 or #15 (it will break the teeth off of your #40f) Make sure you have quick stop...nothing worse then quicking a nail by accident and having no way to stop the bleeding. Ear cleaner is something you may want to add. Dematter. With you clippers you should be also investing in a good quality blade cleaner. I once agian prefer Laube the smell is nice, Kelco makes a good cleaner and Oster hasa decent cleaner as well. CLipper oil...do not let your blades rust!! Do not get Cool Lube or any other spray lubriant. Google Blade Guyz they have instructional websites on clipper care. A place to groom them, possibly a grooming arm and safety loop. Flea comb...not just for fleas! Will get those teeny tiny knots out better then a fine tooth comb, can get eye goobies better too:) |
