Dry itchy skin.... fish oil capsules??? ........Biogroom shampoo...? My 5 year old yorkie started having dry skin issues recently, and just touching her back she wants to scratch, it was really bad this summer, until recently I changed food to a grain free Orijen which has reduced her itching alot, also try keeping bathing to 1 a month but when the time comes she is really in need for a bath. I would love to bath her once every two weeks but i really don't want to strip her of her oils. I tried earthbath but sadly it didn't work for her and dried her coat out more i find. I would like to know if many have had sucess with Biogroom and if so did you use any of their conditioners...would that help too? What are the prices? ALSO, fish oil capsules, i tried them every two days but i found the capsules kinda big, is their any smaller ones that a Yorkie wouldn't have trouble swallowing? I found it helped her coat too! Any advice and tips would really be appreciated! Thanks! Natacha & the trio gals :aimeeyork~Guidoune ***Roxy*** Bee-Bee~:aimeeyork |
Hi! The fish oil capsules- dont' give her the whole thing... just a few drops from it... when i gave it to Layla i would just wrap it in saran for the next day. Also you should be giving Vit E with it as well. have you tried an oatmeal bath? When Layla had her skin issues i would put quick oats in a nylon, tie it up and almost use it as a sponge when i bathed her.. it REALLY helped! |
Thank you... i think i'm going to try that the next time i bath her! Thanks again for the good ideas, I was hoping their was smaller oil capsules so i could just give her 1 at a time because...lol their really smelly when they break! Also i had read about Vit E, i'll be sure to do so! Thanks again!!! Quote:

Hey, I have a Yorkie with itchy skin too. I used Biogroom at first and my Vet said it was a great shampoo because it is soap-less so it doesn't strip the oils from their skin. I'm not sure how itchy your yorkie is, but Daisy got to the point where she was scratching so much she was making scabs on her body-- so after a lot of work we determined she couldn't have food with corn in it. I don't know if that might be something you want to look into. On top of that she does have very dry skin and I use a shampoo called NEEM now and it is wonderful for her skin. She barely ever scratches now. I'm sure its the combination of both but this shampoo is great and its inexpensive. ($15/bottle and you can dilute it to a gallon if you want) Hope some of this helps! I know how frustrating it is to not know why your yorkie is itching! |

Yes please I'd like to know too! Hi! I would also like to know if the fish oil or vitamin has to be a pet formula? Also, how much of it to give and which brand is best? thanks! |
I really like the Biogroom brand, and if you email the company they will send you some free samples, including the oatmeal, that is said to be good for sensitive skin. Their products are extremely concentrated, so mix them 1 to 4 parts water before using. Bio-Groom - Exceptional Pet Care Products for Over 30 Years |
I like using bottled oil - it's so much easier. The one I like is Ark Naturals Royal Coat - which contains fish oil, vit a/d/e, and borage oil. Borage oil contains the fatty acid GLA, which can be pretty essential for skin issues. :) |
Thank you so much for your help everyone!! |
Wylie's Mom how does the Arks Natural oil sme.., I used several kinds of oil and even the one with the slightest smell but I am just very sensitive to the smell of the fish. The one they used does has mild smell which I bought at Pet Natural but it does not seem to work that good to them |

fish oil You can buy fish or salmon oil in a bottle and give it with an eye dropper. |
Yeah I was going to say about the capsules. I would just poke a hole in it and use half in the food you feed her. I just got a bottle of biogroom oatmeal "cream" conditioner, they were out of the shampoo. I'll let you know how it works. Kona (from Kona chips) has a great shampoo and conditioner I definitely recommend. |
There is a brand of dog treats out there (PetSmart) called Omega 3. We bought some for Gracie that has salmon in it and she goes mad for them. It has helped put some weight on her as well as giving her som much needed suppliments. Does anyone have an opinion about that? I think Gracie's hair is going to be dry and brittle. |
