Cotton Coat vs. Silk Coat This might seem like a dopey question... how do I tell if my Yorkie has a cotton or silk coat? He is 15 weeks old and still has his puppy coat. Is it impossible to tell until the adult hair grows in? I'm confused:confused:. |
I think there are several ways to tell. First I have read that if the hair on the head has some white mixed in with it as a puppy and the color is more golden than tan chances are the coat will be silky. Buddy did have white hairs on his chest as well as white/silver mixed in with his gold color as a puppy. Also if the eye's show up green when a picture is taken most times the coat is a silky one. Buddy has a silky coat and as a puppy he was the softest silkest thing I have ever held. Although he did change colors as he grew the texture never changed. Prue softness and his coat is pin straight. No waves or curls at all. I am sure other's will have more suggestions for you but that's about all I know. |
I can't tell with a puppy coat....although I know the eye color rule. Long term breeders can usually tell though. |
Hmmm.. I think Zoe will be a silky but I just went back and looked at some pics and her eyes don't look green in them. She has some grey up on her head. Well, the hairs are black but grey at the roots and she has lighter colors on her chest. Does that mean anything? When I brush her her coat feels really soft. |
What color are the OP's baby's eyes in the flash of the camera? My cottony has gold and my silkies have green. |

1 Attachment(s) Ooh, thanks for all of the tips! His hair is really soft, especially on his head. He's black everywhere except his paws (gold), chest (white), and head (gray, gold, and black). I looked at his pictures and his eyes look just black to me. The hair was matting until I started brushing a couple of times a day. |
Awwwwwwwwww, Your little sweetie looks alot like our little sweetie Ceasar. Ceasar has a cotton coat unlike his Mommy who has a lovely silky coat. Ceasar needs to be brushed at least 2 times a day. If not you can feel the knots forming deep inside his coat. I have to learn how to care for a fluffy cotton coat as this is a new thing for me. Good Luck with your adorable little darlin. He is cute no matter what coat he wears. LOL :animal-pa |
