Suzi is A nightmare to Groom Suzi is nearly 7 months old, and her true colors came out last night :eek: She is A stinker when it comes to trying to groom her. She was awful ! I decided to do this on my own.... I now see that it is not easy . suzi freaked out, and would not hold still at all. Are all Yorkie's hard to groom? Or is it her ? I was careful, and gentle as much as I could, she still went nuts. Suzi had a mat on the top of her head that was bad, I had to get it out, and she was going to let me.... I had to take it out with scissors, it was bad. She was in no pain, or anything, she just would not let me help her. I talked to her, I pet her, i tried treats, which she did not want. Eventually i was able to get the mat out and wanted to trim her ears. i did not get to. Will she settle down? How do I get her use to being groomed? She has to learn that it is vital . I know she felt a lot better , and she did not hold it against me. It was her first real groom. Maybe I was expecting too much? the DVD's I have see and groomer s the dogs are all so nice and good !They stood there calmly ! NOT my dog . :eek: What the hell did I do wrong? |
They do get better. I started early with mine. I would pretend to trim.. to get them used to the sound and smell of everything. Lots of patience is necessary. I have also brushed mine with a soft brush from the time they were little.. so they were used to it. I am sure your baby feels a lot better after getting the snarls out. :) Good luck with your grooming. |
mscat, Mocha is the same.. My mom used to use a slicker, and I think it was painful as hell. When I use the metal tooth comb, she's doing much better. The most difficult part is the legs. I will put it in my hand, she will pull it away :D It was a nightmare at 1st, as my Lulu is such a sweetheart, but I think they do get better. pssssssssssssst: Many times I groom her when she's sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepyyyyyyyyy :D Helps with the scratches she gives me LOL! |
I start my puppies at an early age to get used to getting groomed. I start shaving the hair off the ears at 3 to 4 weeks of age and they get their first grooming at 6 to 8 weeks of age. This is the whole she-bang: grooming table, dryer, clippers combs, nails, etc. Its takes a while for the first grooming but they are soooooo good after about 2 times it is not any problem at all after that. They learn to stay still on the grooming table and learn to accept the noises. I also start show stacking them on the table at that time also. I think that your puppy will learn eventually. Its just a shock when they have to be still for grooming after 7 months. I would suggest doing a complete grooming every 3 to 4 weeks. Best of luck!! |
We have two who are good as gold and just stand there and then we have one that is just horrid! Crosley who is the big one is awful! She's 6 1/2 and she's been going to a groomer her whole life and she's never gotten used to it! :( Some are just easier than others, but starting them young and doing it on a regular basis will make it better for some of them! Grooming problems Zekie is 5 mo. old and terrible to groom. He does not like to be brushed or have his eyes washed. Both of these are like doing an arobic exercise. He does not even like the look of sissors, so can not even get near him with a pair. I have heard that some people do their dogs while they are sleeping. Mine is so active when he is awake, and he is a biter. I don't have much trouble batheing him, which is at least a plus. I did also manage to get his nails trimmed while my husband distracted him. |
Kayla is hard to groom too. The last time I got her nails done they cut her and I know she is going to really be a pill now. She will not even let me go near her ears with the clippers. She has a darling little face and with her hair growing and her not letting me touch her I told my husband she looks like the wolfman. I think we are going to start calling her our little woffiegirl. I think getting a grooming table with a noose is important. When I put all my dogs on there (I have 5!), they know that I mean business. I break up some of their favorite treats into tiny little pieces so that I can reward them for staying still through out the grooming. Even my little wiggle worm, has learned to stay still to get treats. I just bought a small round grooming table from Petedge for $29.99 and I put it on top of my kitchen table on grooming day.
