I have read the thread started on this topic but, nothing was mentioned on how to tell when you are close to the quick. Can someone here (that has used it) tell me this. I have tried the quick finder....didn't work AT ALL! sent it back within days of receiving it. If they didn't hold still you couldn't get it lined up correctly to cut the nail. AND..........it wasn't sharp enough to cut their nails...was made of a very cheap plastic.

It is harder to see on my yorkie than my chihuahua, but the part of the nail that doesn't have quik is shinier than the nail where there is quik. When I look at the nail from the side I see from the foot a dull section and then shiny. The hair kind of gets in the way and makes it difficult but it is the only way I can tell. I do leave a little past the quik to make sure I don't go too short. Good Luck I have read where someone puts thier dog's nail in a stocking to keep the hair pushed back, but I haven't tried it yet. I just do it often and not very much at a time.

Thank you! I didn't know about the shiny and dull part of the nail...I am going to have to check that out. I was told, by my vet, to cut off the curve part of the nail. I am so nervous cutting their nails. I am so worried I am going to cut the quick. I'm sure they sense this and this could be why they squirm when I cut them.

Well, that's something I've never heard before.....shinier, huh? I'll have to check that out. From what I understand, when you get close to the quick, you will see a tiny black(?)or is it white(?) dot on the tip of the nail...I'm pretty certain it's black. I just ordered the peticure and have high hopes of it making trimming my babies' nails possible for me. I've been taking them in to have them done (free of charge:D), but with 4 yorkies it's just to often and they don't seem to take enough off.

It is sometimes hard to tell but....the nail is wider and then gets narrower at the end. It gets narrower during the "safe-clip" area. I just make sure that I don't go any higher than that point. So far, so good!!!

I have friends that use a dremel drill bit on theirs because they are able to control it better
It does amazing work
I am going to start trying that
You are able to see as you work if you are going to short before it is too late
