Dry Coat help?? My almost 9 month old's coat has begun to change texture. Before it was nice shiny and silky. now it is getting poofy and quite dry looking. Is there something i can use to add some hydration to her coat? something for a dog? human leave in condish? Should i add something to her diet? any advice will be greatly appreciated. |
As far as food goes, make sure you are feeding your dog a high quality, high protein dog food. A nine month old should still be eating food that is appropriate for puppies. You should also make sure to brush him daily. This helps the oils from the skin to spread out into the ends of the fur. A leave in conditioner or detangler/ grooming spray is good for spraying on the coat before you brush it. For bathing, it would be best to use a shampoo and conditioner that is formulated for dogs. Human products are designed for a different ph balance and can often dry out a dog's skin. Pippin had a dry skin problem a while back and most people recommended that I switch to Buddy Wash and Buddy Rinse shampoos and conditioners, or Petsilk. I now use buddy wash and rinse on Pippin and his skin and coat are looking much better. |

My Suzi sometimes has Dandruff.... She eats a high quality food . I use a conditioning spray on her. It helps keep her coat shiny. The dandruff has lessened greatly, but is still there at times. |

Shampoo's all work so differently. If your Yorkie's coat is dry you can try an hot oil treatment too. VO5 makes them. Human product. Be careful of the eyes is all. Try different shampoo's. There are several here that use Pantane and conditioner and they love the results. I personally love Minksheen. Buddy has a silky coat and it keeps him glowing. It also has a flea repellent in it. Just like humans what works for one does not necessarly work for another. Keep trying until you find the right product. |
I forget where I read this, but I saw somewhere that you can add fish oil to the dogs food to help with a dry coat and dry skin. it said to get the fish oil capsule at the vitimin store and brake them open, and add to their food. I havent tried this yet, but I think im going to, |

I also heard that fish oil helps with skin and coat. Also try a shampoo with oatmeal or aloe vera in it. |
I got some fish oil today, It is in the vitimin section of the drug store, the bottle just says fish oil on it, they are gel capsuls. just cut one open and pour the liquid on the dog food. it smells really strong when you cut the capsual open, but my dogs didnt mind they ate the food, infact they seemed to like the taste of the fish oil. |
high quality diet does a world of difference to coat and skin i have noticed. Try to add some fatty acids to her died, fish oil or even a suppliment like show stopper. Its very high in fat though so if your baby is a porker try to only give the recommened amount only or adjust her daily food ratio accordingly. An oatmeal based shampoo, something mild and soothing should help too for any dry skin or itching. |
