mats... I have a five month old yorkie who mats very easily. I recently went out of town and left her with family. When I got back, I found she has some very severe mats. I usually use cowboy magic to get them out, but it wont work on them. Is there anything else I should try? I really dont want to have to shave her, but I don't want her to be in pain, either. Please help. Thanks. |
Wow, if Cowboy Magic doesn't work, I have no idea how to get them out!! That's how I get all of mine out! I hope someone else has a hint for you. I also wanted to Welcome you to YT!! What is your little girl's name? |
Thanks! Her name is Bailey and as soon as I figure out how, i'll try to post pictures. |
Welcome! Once after Cali had been spayed, I had a onsie on her and didn't comb her and she had a thick cottony coat and got really badly matted. I took her to a groomer who said she would not shave her and she got all the mats out and she looked great. I think she said she put something on her coat and left it on for awhile and then worked out all the mats. It was worth the extra money to save her coat. |
I googled Cowboy Magic and the site I found shows using it on horses. Is it safe for a yorkie? Where can I find it? |
Yes, it is safe for dogs. :) I bought mine at a tack shop but I know there are several places online that sell it. Someone else will probably come up with a site. Or you could just do a search for it. I have even seen it on e-bay. You will probably have to put it on and leave it for awhile for it to work. I am not that patient and tend to clip, clip, clip. Welcome to YT!!!! |
thanks I was trying to find out about a product like this. You answer my question before posting it. Thanks, and, Olso, I would like to know if the matting happens to all yorkies even when you brush them every day. I brusgh mine everyday, and still gets matts |
you can get it on Amazon for a good price. |
Hi there, I haven't tried this personally but heard that it works. Just apply some baby lotion to your pets coat, let it sit a bit and then comb through. I hope that helps. Also....... your local CoOp/tack shop should sell the Cowboy Magic. :animal-pa |
Cowboy Magic I ordered it online from Equine Supplies, Horse Supplies, Horse Supply 4 oz for total of 12.95 which includes shipping and everything. That's the cheapest I've found. I tried it and apparently I'm not using enough or doing it incorrectly as Canyon still has tangles. I'm going to try the baby oil suggestion next. |
I keep a small spray bottle filled with water and conditioner on hand at all times. If my little one gets a mat I just soak it down with the water/conditioner mixture and with a few gentle tries it comes right out. |
mats just wash her and cream rinse her and dry as normal then use a comb with rotating teeth......the Detangler and pet edge sells a similiar one under a different name. I have never had a comb demat so easily and it does not break hairs. short strokes over and over hanging onto the base as best you can but it works. |
I use the stuff that's included in Feria hair coloring by L'Oreal for conditioning. The instructions say to use most of the tube but I find that I only have to use a half inch of so in my hand for my hair. That leaves a lot in the tube, so I use it on my dogs. It has to be rinsed out, but it leaves the coat (or hair) really smooth and silky. I don't use it around their face though. |
