New Owner; Dream Puppy! Hey Y'all! I was just presented yesterday with my life long dream puppy! I waited all of my life - like having a child - until THE right time. The time was now! I am so honored and proud to be owned by a Yorkie! She is EXACTLY four months old - to the day! I dont know ANYTHING because I didnt know I would be spoiled with a baby! Im so appreciative BUT! Im scared! And VERY behind in what I need to know! I KNOW NOTHING! I would have done my foot work before if I would have gotten her myself. I am a research junkie - but with this - Im getting SO CONFUSED! I am researching and see so much about 'shaving the puppy'? SHAVING MY PUPPY!? She has some matting - very little. Sounds crazy but if thats what Im suppose to do - I'll do it! Maybe its for the health - coat? I have chosen to crate train. Im basically begging for HELP! I want to know all there is to know! I want this precious creature to have the best care possible so I have a lot of learning to do. I also read that her lil gray spot was a bad thing. That concerns me. I dont care what color she is - but I read that that goes away when they get older? I am basically just asking: As a new owner of a 16 week female thats up to date on shots - micro-chipped - due for more shots in two weeks - what more - besides the trying to comb the lil matting she has - do I need to know - DO!? She came home yesterday and settled in very well! Happy girl! Frisky - so precious I still cry a bit sometimes when I look at her. I balled like a baby when I got her. :p She seemed to like the bath. She has a few knots that Im having trouble getting out. Her hair - now - is kind of 'cottony' now except for around her head and face. Is this normal and may it change as she gets older? Is it puppy hair? Im so lost and this is so important to me - that she turns out as spiritually - emotionally - HEALTHY and (hey - I'll admit it!) as pretty and groomed as she can possibly be. PLEASE SOMEONE TAKE MY HAND AND HELP ME RAISE THIS BABY! It means the world to me that she ends up a loyal - loving - WELL POTTY-TRAINED (of the utmost importance!!!) life mate! Love Peace and Tolerance, ~ Mikaela |
Can't wait to see pictures. Congratulations!! I'll be getting my baby in 10 days but I have some past yorkie experience. if you're talking about the hair on the top of her head turning to silver, this is normal. As far as the matting, I wouldn't shave all her hair, just those areas. Crate training is good. You'll find lots of useful information here with very experienced yorkie owners. Search the topics you have questions about, I can guarantee you, you'll spend hours reading them. Welcome to YT! |
Congratulations!!! I am so happy you got your baby. There is nothing like a Yorkie. I have never shaved my yorkies. I try to keep them mat free which isn't easy, but when they do get matted I use some oil (most pet stores carry sprays for getting matts out and slowly work out the mats. Try and get her use to bseing brushed and combed daily. The silver is normal. It will turn gold as she gets older. As for crate training, I am not an expert on that so hopefully others can help. I see you live on Islamorada, I was there once it is so beautiful. Enjoy your baby. |
Your first step was finding Yorkietalk! REad, Read and read some more... If you write a message to South East Texas Yorkies - Home, she will email you a great guide called What to do when your expecting (a puppy that is). It would be great for you. Good luck to you! and CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! |

Welcome to YT! We are so glad to have you and your baby here. If you have any questions you're welcome to send me a PM (private message). When I first got my Jamie I thought he had a cotton coat but it turned out just to be his puppy coat. Once it grew out long enough I trimmed the puppy coat off and he was left with the most beautiful silk coat. If the matts are too bad and you can't get them out with oil, I've just used one side of a pair of tiny scissors to just slice up through the matt. That way you don't have to cut length off but you get the matt out without hurting her. |
hi welcome and congratulations. you'll get lots of info here. Just keep asking. |

:yorkietal Welcome to YorkieTalk Mikaela and Frisky :yorkietal Congratulations on your new baby. I am so very happy for you. It sounds like you need to just sit down, scoop little Frisky up in your arms and love her a bit and catch your breath. What a wonderful gift to be presented with. Hugs  to you both. You will learn as you go, there is way too much to know to take it all in at once. Your vet will be an invaluable sourse of information (except about food).
