Do yorkies have trouble losing their puppy coat? My puppy is 5 months old. She normally has very silky, soft puppy fur. Lately, she began matting at her roots. We tried brushing but it didn't help at all. She turned into one giant mat. When I bathed her I couldn't even run my fingers through her fur, much less the brush. So I was wondering if this is just her puppy coat growing out or something. Since, yorkies don't shed I was wondering if they have trouble losing their puppy coats. Is this true? Or is my dog just a mess? My DH and I shaved her the best that we could last night. We left the hair on her legs and head. We are hoping that when it grows back it will be normal again. HELP!:confused: |
Baxter got in a mess like that when he was neutered and miserable and I stopped brushing him. I had him shaved. That's been about a month ago and the hair is coming back silky and silver. I hope our days of horrible mats are over. |
That is the norm for when they loose their puppy coat. A good way to help that when they are in that stage is to water down some conditioner and spritz them and brush through. Brush softly becuase you don't want them hating the brushing. Their hair tends to feel like a brillo when they are in that stage. Hubby used to say that our Lulu used to look like a perm gone bad. |
I like to use a fine tooth flea comb as a comb on yorkies, keeps those matts at bay. |
To avoid mats puppies should be brushed every day. |

When is a good time to start grooming? My puppy is about 3 months old... when is it a good time to start him being professionally groomed? I've been doing some of the grooming myself- brushing his coat everyday and trimming here and there of his facial hair and other areas just to keep him looking neat, but is 3 months too early to get him professionally groomed? Should I wait? What are your thoughts? It's funny, because I think I might have gone overkill with the brushing... I would brush his coat like 3 times a day (cuz I thought it was fun) and I think he got annoyed with me because now everytime I try and brush him, he walks away from me! :eek: |

Most groomers want to see puppy soon after they have had all their shots. If it is a good groomer it will set them up for good grooming experiences for life. If it's a bad groomer, well, I can't imagine that would be beneficial. While I really like my groomer, I decided to start grooming Ranger myself. It's actually kind of fun!! As far as the mats, my boy got really, really bad right at about nine months old. My groomer suggested we do a short cut to get rid of the puppy hair. It is now growing in a beautiful silver/blue silk. Good luck!! |
Some puppies has baby fine hair. That really mats but its important you get all the mats out before you wash them. Otherwise its just worse and the mats get tighter. So make sure its all out first then wash them. I also use a conditioner either mixed with water to spray on or a good spray that will untangle and make the comb out better after wash. We make it pretty good then after washing. If you are tired of do that the puppy cut is the best. Good luck. |
