Fur looks ratty! Is it just the puppy fur that looks kind of ratty? Even minutes after I brush her??? Is this something that she will grow out of once the fur starts to get longer? It is so sad because she is 100% clean, but she looks like she has been rolling around in the grass for hours :)...one of her favorite hobbies. I brush her daily to get the matted fur out, but in minutes she goes from fluff ball to a mess! As cute as she is, I see these pictures of ya'll's babies and their fur seems so much silkier and straight without kinks and waves! Let me know! Lauren and Keelyn (as she is passed out from...rolling around in the grass outside for an hour :)) |
I'm not sure because Toby is 2 1/2 years old and his hair looks a bit ratty after a few days but looks great the day or two after his bath. I brush daily to keep the matts down as I keep him in a full coat. I'm thinking about doing some deep conditioning and see if it helps. They are just such active little dogs that it is hard to keep every hair in place!! :lol2: :lol2: |
I'll be watching this thread with interest since I feel the same way about Abby. IN the words of her groomer, "she has a massive coat" I had her thin it out a bit hoping it cut down on the messy look, but no such luck. She's so soft, but her coat is out of control. We have made big strides in brushing. Before she hated it, now I give her cherrios while brushing her and she even lifts her head so I can do her neck and chest :) That's huge for us!!! I so hope that some day she has a nice silky coat. Her parents did. BTW, how old is your baby? Abby is just over 5 months. |
Funny you should ask because I posted an almost identical post on the grooming board. Mufasa always looks like he just rolled out of the bed even though I brush him every night. He just looks ratty sometimes. I guess it's just the type of coat he has. |
she is only 10 weeks! She hates being brushed too, I have found she likes the comb better than the wire brush but she is a little wiggle worm! |
I noticed Zoeybear looks kind of dull after she wears clothes. It is like it damages her hair. |
My Jewels always looks ratty a few days after her bath |
bumping up to see if this is just a puppy coat problem. |
2 Attachment(s) I think puppy coat has a lot to do with it. It all depends on what your babys' coat is going to end up to be. AprilLove had ratty, matty puppy coat, now it is very soft and smooth, I think what they call modified coat, but I'm not an expert and not sure what true silk is. Her coat never never matts. Heres a pic of her puppy coat (6 months) and her last week (2 1/2 years old) eta: If you post this question in the showing section, you might get some good answers from people who show and really know a lot about coats :-) |

I think its hard to determine alot about their coats when they are pups. Looking at their parents you could get some idea, but mine always looked ratty within minutes of a bath. Lol, reminds me of my daughter when she was little, she had this beautiful silky blonde hair and when I washed it and blow dryed it, she looked like an angel, 30 minutes later she would be rolling around with her brothers and back to messy. We have 4 adult yorkies and it took about 2 years to see exactly what their coats would look like:) |
Lily is 4 months old today and I think she has a nice thick coat...it mats underneath bad though in places. I don't know much about all of that stuff yet. Her mommy seemed to have a nice thick coat and when I got her they had shaved the daddy because they said "when their females are in heat he rolls in everything real bad and had to be shaved"?? There were 2 females that had puppies when I got Lily and the other "mommy" had more thin silky looking hair I think and Lily's mommy was thicker and her color was black/brown and she was 4 yrs old if that means anything at all?? The other female was more "silver" color and the daddy was the same daddy to both liters at the time I got her. The breeder had 15 dogs in her house all running around in and out!! Lily is AKC and they all seemed well cared for.....I guess this is "hand raised"!!LOL They seemed to love their dogs so I was happy for that. |
