head grooming Does anyone have any advice on how to calm a yorkie for clipping past shoulders. I have 1 baby that freaks out when I try to do ant clipping past shoulders. During the summer I keep them all short. She is timid about the rest of hre body but tries biting and screaming. I feel bad 4 her. I always take things slow and give breaks. I trim back legs butt and hips. Then break. Belly. Break. front legs Chest. Break. Then head. If at anytime anyone acts like they need a break we take one. Help |
Not real sure...i am trying to do my two as well. Oliver has been being groomed since he was a pup so he is used to it and is pretty good for me, Brooklyn however, she is just 6 mos. and not real used to it yet. She hates it all! I am hoping that someone will give you advice that i can try as well. I have been doing treats and breaks, but she hates when you get near her head...:( |
My Annie had issues with loud noises. So knowing that, whenever I used the dryer or clippers on her, I would put a cotton ball in her ears to help muffle the noise. Gracie seems freaked by the vibration, so I don't think cotton balls will help with that. :p So far I've only trimmed her ear tips. But I started by have the clippers off letting her sniff them and rubbing them on her. Then turning them on and letting her sniff and then rubbing them on her using the backside of the clippers, not the blade side, so that she would get use to the feel. Then finally doing a little clip then back off, more rubbing then clip a little more. And of course a lot of treats and praise all throughout to try and keep it positive. Hope that helps give you some ideas to try. Oh and with Gracie, since she is only 5 mo old, I do that kind of grooming after a long walk so that her energy level was lower. There was no need to walk Annie first, if her energy level got any lower she wouldn't have been able to stand during the clipping. :D |
grooming Try and get her used to the clipper noise by turning it on several times a day..grooming can be almost fun time if you use treats..I put dab of peanut butter in puppies mouths to distract them...chicken/cheese cubes worked well for my grooming clients... |
This may sound extremely elementary, but have you checked to make sure that the clippers aren't getting hot? We used to bathe and groom our shih-tzu. After a very difficult grooming experience, we noticed that his behavior continued when we'd groom him. Our clippers, which were about a year old, were getting too hot and were actually hurting him. Once we got new clippers, he became a model citizen again. :) |
I thought about the hot clipper thing and no they arent getting hot...i am gonna try the peanut butter though. I am used to trying to desensitize horses and I did the rubbing on and off...she is just going to be difficult I guess!!!!!!!!! |
