Air dry or blow dry? For those of you who show and even those that don't..... I was just reading something and they were saying that in general, after shampooing they do not blow dry their show dogs as the hot air damages the hair which does make sense but I know I was told before that you should always blow dry so that's what I've been doing. Now I'm wondering if that's the wrong thing to do? I'm not talking on show days - I think then they would be blown dry but just general maintenance is it less damaging to their hair to air dry? Any advice?! |
I just read this recently too, was that on the Sumerwinds products? Anyway, blow drying only damages the hair if you use too high a heat. The dryer should be set to warm and constantly moving back and forth. We live in Az so you wouldn't think we would have a problem with air drying, but Joey just acts like he's freezing. I think if you were doing it everyday, there might be a chance of drying out the hair cuticle, but I see no problem with once a week. If you're showing, then I suppose you'll do anything to get the best looking coat. |
I blow dry Princess Katy on the lowest air setting. ;) |
I blow dry. I can't imagine leaving a wet dog to shiver. |
I blow dry except for when I'm at the lake. I personally think their hair looks better when you blow dry versus air dry. Just like our own hair... I sure as heck know that MY hair looks like CRAP when it air drys. |
I've been told by several that show to always blow dry, similar to how Nancy described in her above post. The reasoning was that left wet and to air dry, hair attracts dirts and oils more quickly, which damage the hair and defeats the just given bath. |
I use a forced air dryer, like the groomer's use. It doesn't have heat just blows the water off the dog. Plus it takes me less than half the time to dry than with a regular blow dryer. |
I always blow dry! I start out with a higher setting and then go to a lower setting to finish. You just dont get the same "look" when you air dry and you definately wouldnt air dry if you are showing. I brush with a pin brush as I dry so there are absolutely no tangles. By air drying, you are "setting" in the tangles and you have to brush much longer to dry the dog there-fore you will have more breakage of the hair. Also, be careful of those air-force dryers that blow the water off the dog. They have so much force that they can do damage to eyes and ears with an accidental direct hit. |
Phoenix air dries, hes in a puppy cut so not really much hair to dry lol. And also we dont even own a blow dryer :p Maybe if i let his hair grow out i will blow dry but i love the puppy cut look ;) |
