Yorkie hair I have a customer at my grooming shop that has 2 yorkies. Both of them have great hair. One of them knot up at the base of the hair soo badly. We (the owners and I) are both dont know what to do to try and keep it from knotting up so badly. I can get him brushed out, but he will knot up around the neck when I have the grooming noose around the neck. They will only cut him show as a last alternative, but dont want to. His hair is soooo gorgeousl, silver and silky. Is there any advice as to what I can have him do at home to help keep things from getting so matted. They CLAIM they brush him every other day, sometimes everyday. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |
First off - Welcome to YT! Is the yorkie with the hair matting problem a puppy still? If so, puppies can go through a stage of their puppy coat matting, and you will just have to be patient waiting for the adult coat. If the dog isn't a puppy and the hair matting is as bad as you say, I don't think they are grooming him daily at home. Before washing you could try using cornstarch to remove the knots. |
We really dont know how old he is as he was a rescue, but I would guess he is about 1-2 yrs old. He is young so it could be a puppy coat issue. I would like to think they do brush him as much as they say they do. They are very responsible people and (I know this sounds naive), but I believe what they say. I am wondering if maybe they are not bushing him correctly. His wife is legally blind and maybe that coud be it. Thanks, I dont know why I didnt think about "puppy coat"........:p |
Proper back brushing should fix the problem. Maybe you could walk your client through how to back brush. You may also want to suggest they dilute the shampoo to make it easier to rinse out. Shampoo buildup will mat a coat in a hurry. Welcome to YT!! :D |
Thank you for the welcome you guys. I will talk with them more in depth. Thanks. |
