Matts... Lucy is a little over a year old and no matter what i do I can't control her from not forming these horrible matts. She's getting groomed on Saturday and I really don't want to have to have her shaved. So I wanted to tackle some of her matts myself. Normally, the groomer would be fine removing the matts, but Lucy is a handful to have groomed. And we usually try to make the experience as gentle as possible. I have one of those combs that are used for removing matts, but what is the best way to tackle their removal. Any advice is welcome. Also, any suggestions on how to keep her still during this process? |
Do you have a slicker brush? I use this to work out mats when mine get them. You just keep working the mat from the bottom up with this brush, with short strokes. It will usually get them out, but it takes time and patience so that you don't hurt the dog. If you do it little by little the dog will usually tolerate it pretty good. |
Yes I also have a slicker brush, the matt comb/brush I have is similar to the slicker brush so it's best to work from the bottom up? I'll have to try that. Do you use any detangler or anything when you do this? |
I had a yorkie with a cottony coat at one time. Both the groomer and I decided it was just too much to put her throught, to keep it long. I did the grooming myself and kept it short after that. The one I have now has a silk coat and although it is a job since it is so thick, it doesn't matt hardly at all. There will never be an angel like my littel 'Molly" with the cotton coat......so much like my Crystal now!! |
i didnt want to cause my yorkie any pain ,so i opted to shave her.., now her coat is shiny and beautiful... |

You need to use a detangler with your comb or slicker I use Infusium 23 Moisture leave in treatment. I put it in a spray bottle & spray on tangle & work the tangles out. You should use any good conditioner diluted with water in a spray bottle. |
Is this a matt comb tool? Pet Grooming Tools Dematters De-Matting Tools |
