I have a 4 month old Morkie and am new to YT. Can someone recommend a good shampoo and conditioner that helps with mats. Is there a leave-in treatment that is good? My baby, Mason, has been groomed once. The groomer told me that with her experience with this particular cross, she believes that they mat even worse than a full-blooded yorkie when their adult hair starts coming in. I brush him every day with a slicker brush but he still gets mats. She says it is too soon for her to tell what type of hair he is going to have. When I go to the pet supply store, there are so many different shampoos to choose from that I just end up leaving without anything. I am using my shampoo and conditioner to bath him but after reading some posts, I see that this is not good for his coat and skin. I apologize if this issue has already been addressed on this site but I searched this forum for quite some time and never found a thread that answered my questions. Any suggestions?

I like Mink Sheen Shampoo. I follow that up with Pantene Pro V conditioner (for people). If there are still tangles after that, I use a DAB of Cowboy Magic detangler. When all else fails, I keep them clipped short until the adult hair grows in.

I like the Milksheen shampoo too, or I use Biosilk which is a human shampoo! Petsilk products are nice too. The Cowboy Magic detangler is a must have!! Brooke gets matted almost to her skin under her arms and I used to have to cut it but now I just dab some of the Cowboy Magic on it and work the matt out!! Good Luck!

So people shampoo is ok? I was looking around and saw others who recommend cowboy magic for mats. I am not familiar with this product but I plan on looking into it. I think I saw somewhere on here that they sell it on ebay. Is it ok to use over a long period of time? I have heard that other equine products can cause a build up over time. I feel so stupid. I thought shampoo was shampoo. I don't put this much thought and effort into finding my own hair products, LOL!

Thanks for the info. I went to CM's website and see that they sell it at an almost local livestock/farm supply store. (I live in a very rural area so nothing is local for me!!) I plan on getting a tube next week.

I would not use a slicker brush on your baby...This can break the hair and is not an optimal brush for yorkies or maltese. You'll end up with not nice looking hair. Try to find a good pin brush without the little balls on the end because those little balls break the hair as well. Remember to only brush a wet coat not a dry one. If you brush her hair between baths, spray some detangling spray or leave-in conditioner spray and then brush.
I like to use Coat Handler shampoo and conditioner. It leaves their hair shiny and very nice. It does not have a strong smell, which is important for me.

I use the Minksheen as well for their weekly bath, but I have to tell you...the best product out there is chris christensen products. I use Chris Christensen Day to Day for special occasions, or when their coat is looking dull. The only problem with it is there are so many steps. If you have the time to use all the products, your pup comes out beautiful. I especially like the protein conditioner-I use it monthly to keep them shiny and smooth. Chris products also have WONDERFUL brushes. I got the Little Wonder brush (I will post a link below)It's a little expensive, but worth it because your baby will absolutely adore being brushed with it.

Which system kit do you use? I originally thought the black on black, but what would that do to the tan/gold on the face and arms? Would it turn it black? :confused:

The day-to-day is what I use, I really don't know about the black/white/gold ones....you can't go wrong with day-to-day!

I use Healthy Sexy Hair leave in conditioner. I also agree...forget the slicker!

I am a little confused about using oil. I wash Mason once a week. If you use oil, do you have to wash them more often? Right now he still has his puppy coat. Do you use oil on puppy hair or wait unitl their adult hair comes in?

I confess, I have brushed Mason when dry but most of the time I use Johnson&Johnson detangler spray on him before I brush. I am learning. I have cheap pin brush but my groomer is the one who told me to get a slicker brush. However, when we had our nightly brushing, I used the old pin brush and he seemed to enjoy it. But he is a pretty laid back boy and does not really mind the brushing unless I have to really work at a mat. Thanks for all of your info. I am finding out how truly stupid I am when It comes to my babies. I have a year old Peekapoo but I keep him in a short shiztu cut with a top knot. I have just always used my own products on him and a oatmeal flea shampoo that I got from the vet when it is necessary. My friend suggested that I skip the flea shampoo because it is so harsh and try the blue Dawn dish soap. Live and Learn. :)
