Topknots Does anyone have any suggestions??? My Abby is 7 months old and has never been to a groomer. I have brushed her since she was a pup and lets just say she "tolerates" it. I am trying to let her hair grow long enough to put in a topknot. As of now, she can hardly see because the hair hangs down in front of her eyes and sticks out wildly around the eye area. I have tried different bands for a topknot but she eventually gets them out by rubbing her head on the floor. Tried barrettes which really worked well, then she got those out and tried to eat one. I hate to get her hair cut short, but I am about at my wits end with her. She absolutely hates me touching her head/face area. I welcome any advice here - I really don't know what to do! Jackie |
I was trying to grow out Hot Rod's hair too before I started taking him to the groomers. I bought a grooming video and it said that to use a little bit of hair gel to smooth out hairs. I was going to try to grow his hair out again and it's getting long around his eyes again so I am goingto try that. good luck. :) |
Since Mia was little I pu things in her hair so she was use to it. When I got Cody the lady said "oh he hates his face touched" so he had God awful tearstains and a shaggy head. Well that lasted 1 day after I got him home I lovingly sat him on my lap and washed his face and combed his hair and but on a rubber band. He resisted at first and I gentle held his beard until he saw who was the packleader. This went on for about 2 weeks until he saw no matter what he did I was going to wash his face and put that rubberband on his head. I would always say "good boy" and give him a treat when we were finished. He still hates to have his face touched but he allows me to groom him without a problem. Peanut saw the other 2 and just let me do whatever to him. Consistancy and patience. You may want to put her on a counter top with a towel underneath to have her feel a little unsecure and she should stay still long enough to do a topknot on her. Remember to praise and give her a treat afterwards. |
:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: Yeah, that.. |
Tessa has no problem being groomed but she hates having a band put in her head. I actually put a treat on my boobs and get her to rest her head there while I do her topknot.;) I works really well, and I got the idea from a book where the Yorkie was resting her head on a rolled up towel while she had her topknot put in. Having her on my lap makes it easier for me. |

Reggie doesn't mind topknots nor grooming. He patiently waits. I use the little black hair bands...small. If he has a bow...I put the bow bands UNDER the black one to help it stay in. |

Btw, maxlover....put her hair up...and then distract her. That is what I had to do with Ramsey...once she was distracted...she forgot she had anything in her hair and left it alone. So I'd put it up....play a few minutes...or give her a treat...anything vs just setting her down. |
You ladies are tooo funny. I'm not even going to tell my husband about this. HA! |
I use the small cloth covered bands found in the "toddler/infant" department at Walmart... they seem to stay better than the others for "head rubbers".. Hope tried for a long time to rub her out but I do the "distraction" thing too.... give her a couple of treats and give her something to be excited about until she is used to the feeling.... (I type this as my raggedy head little girl runs all over AFTER she managed to get a terrycloth band out... hehe) |
Thank you everyone, for your advice! You guys are awesome, and I couldn't stop laughing on the boob thing. Ha Ha! I will try the gel and be more consistent on getting her used to combing her face area. I just need to have more patience! Happy Mothers Day to all you moms of furkids and skin kids! Jackie |
I have this same problem with Stewie and Kallie... They actually rub their hair on the counch so much that their hair is breaking off like a woman with split ends.. I use those thick grooming bands form Petedge.com. Their hair gets matted around the bands and when I go to take them out, there is hair stuck to them.. What am I doing wrong? |
