My yorkie (17 weeks) hates to be brushed Does anyone have any suggestions to make this a better experience for both of us. I use Fresh 'n Clean (Oatmeal and baking soda) shampoo and conditioner. Wash and rinse him well, but the slightest pull and he becomes wild..scratching, biting, snarling...I've tried several types of brushes...any suggestions would be welcome... |
Kibble has hated to be combed from day #1 I found that the slicker brush works the best and after I shampoo and cond him, I apply pet silk in his hair, this really makes them soft and helps take the matts out easier. I bought it online, not sure how much it was. But if you don't get control of her now, you will have one matt mess! Specially under the arms, hind legs and belly! |
Fritzel hates to be brushed. He doesn't get mean he just tries to run away. I try to brush a little bit at a time and give him treats afterward. He still hates it, but he hates taking a bath and getting his nails trimmed too. But it needs done. I just use the treats. He is very food motivated! |

Don't give up! Toto was already being brushed by her breeder when we brought her home at 16 weeks ... I kept it up! What I did was just barely brush her when she was relaxed in my lap. Not what you would call a "good brushing", just a little with a good boar bristle brush. When I brushed her "seriously", I used Coat Handlers spray conditioner to prevent breakage & pulling. Before I knew it, she looked forward to "our time" and now, over four years later, she will lay on her back in my lap for as long as I will brush ... even holds her little head way back as if to say "here, get right under my neck"!! :p She will lay on her back when I am grooming her ... hold her little legs up so I can clip them ... sometimes she almost giggles when I am clipping her little belly and "hoo hoo"! :) She has lain on her little back for about 45 minutes and let me brush, clip and do her nails ... you just simply have to make them enjoy it!! Sit down, hold your dog and rub him, scatch behind the ears, rub his belly ect. Relax and let him relax. Replace you hand with the brush and rub him with it. Don't worry about getting out mats or how he looks. Let him see that the brush feels good. Do that every day and hopefully he will get used to it. |
When my Oliver was that age, he was the same way. He would go wild too. I agree with don't give up! I also didn't let him have his way -- sometimes it took a LONG time to get him all brushed out. I would brush for a few minutes and take a break and massage him. I think the little mini massages helped relax him. When he calmed down, I started brushing again. It seemed like a puppy thing. He still doesn't like brushing, but he doesn't fight anymore at all with me or his groomer. Your baby will outgrow it too. (although its sort of a relief to hear someone else's baby acts that way too -- I though mine was just a nut!!) |
Lana started like this to but with time, food rewards, and patience she came around. I brushed her softly in non knotted spots while she slept and putting her on the table top to brush helped too. Good Luck |
