Quick question about different yorkie hair coats? Out of all my yorkies - 4 to be exact MeiLing hair seems so greasy. I give all of them a bath at the same time. Groom and use the same product. But within half a day MeiLing looks so dirty again. Her hair looks so greasy...can anyone tell me what I need to do to stop that from happening? Or is that a good thing? I dunno. It just makes me want to give her a bath everyday. Please help! |
My Pixie has that thinner, straight hair that looks greasy really fast. I can't even use Petsilk on her as it makes her so greasy. But she is a dream to comb hardly ever matts. |

hair It is most often a form of seborrhea..the oil glands work over time...use Dawn dish soap,no conditioners and bath weekly...a dermo vet can help if all else fails. |

Dawn I had a girl with this problem from ages of 3 to 5 yrs. I cut her coat short, I could take a paper towel and wipe her off...the paper towel would literally be strained with oil..so I go to a VERY high dollar dermo vet in Montgomery county MD...he recommends his products and pin points the problem as being seborrhea..there was no flaking or itching, sores etc...I bought his products to the tune of $250...used it faithfully and it worked well...then my vet tells me to use Dawn...it works the same..BUT my Yorkie was clipped short, so the hair was not involved...it did not dry out her skin and as she got older around 5 yrs, her problem suddenly stopped. I recommend using the Dawn first..and then using a good shampoo for NORMAL, not dry or oily skin...no conditioner. |

I don't want to clip her short because i am hoping to be able to show her....but it is still too early to tell...she is currently 4 months old. |
puppy If she is four months and you want to show her, I would go in another direction. Invest in Coat Handers shampoo and rince..it is all water based. Bathe her weekly and keep her well brushed and groomed...I doubt a 4 month old has a serious problem...of course, they can but most are going through a stage...if there are no red spots, itching, flaking skin..I would wait it out... |
I agree with Pat. You might just need to try a different shampoo. I use #1 All Systems Conditioning Shampoo for my adult dogs. Maybe you should be using a puppy shampoo since she is so young. Some conditioners make the coat look greasier. Also, be sure to brush her with a clean brush. If your brush is oily and you bath her and brush her with a oily brush then her coat will get dirtier faster. You might also want to ask the breeder what she recommends for a puppy. |

shampoo The reason I like Coat Handlers is, a Yorkie breeder developed it from her experince with Yorkie hair...the rinse/conditioner can be left in for coat growing and it is non-oily..it is water based and washes out very easily...the clarifying shampoo rids the coat of old shampoo build up and improves the hair so much. There are dozens of good products, but Coat Handlers has always worked on any Yorkie coat I have had....some of my grooming clients had wiry hair and it helped a bit better then others... |

products Coat Handlers is as safe as using Johnsons Baby shampoo...there is nothing in it that would harm a dog of any age..good luck |
