Can you recommend a good clipper that isn't outrageouly priced (I would like to stick in the $150 range if possible or less) Teddy's coat is very very thick, he is half maltese. I want one that will be able to handle his coat and not over-heat so I can groom him in one sitting. What do you recommend? Thanks for the response!!

I like my Oster Golden A-5 two speed slipper. It is around $125.00 and comes with a #10 blade. I got mine from Ryans Pet Supply.

I'm purchasing the Oster A5 clipper this week!
I checked Ryan's and it's $139 and comes with a free blade.
Petedge has it for $144 and it comes with a free finisher trimmer. I'm going with Petedge because I was going to buy the trimmer anyway and that saves me $45!

Forgot to ask! Which do you think would be better to get - the blade or the finisher? What size combs do all of you use to get a decent length? Thanks

I'm sure someone on here could answer this question better, I'm just starting to gather supplies. From what I've researched, I've read the #10 and #40 blades are the important ones. The clipper comes with the #10 and the finisher comes with the #40.
The free blades you get with the other one are 7f and 15, I don't know if those are essential to have or not?

hmmm I'm not sure either. I think I want to get the comb attachment that is 1 inch so he is still fluffy - I'll have to read some more

Oh, I am purchasing a separate comb attachment set. I'm buying a set from Petedge by the company Millers Forge. I think it has 6 different size snap on comb attachments and it right around $14.00.
I know I need the different size combs, but I don't think I need the different blades I mentioned above.

Another question!! Sorry! What do you use the finisher for? Would I use this for trimming around the pads of his feet? Or only to trim ears - Teddy's ears have long hair -like a maltese so I wouldn't do that. I'm trying to decide if I need the finisher b/c Drs. Foster Smith has the A5 for $120 w/out finisher but free shipping, and PetEdge has it for $159 including shipping with the finisher. I'm so unsure of what I need, but I already trim Teddy's face myself even when he gets groomed so it just makes sense to start grooming him myself :confused:

From everything I've read and the DVD I bought on grooming you can use it for ears, face, neck and the pads. I just ordered mine on Friday!

I ordered them and they seem to work pretty well, but I only use it once and didn't do too much b/c Teddy was nervous. I kept stopping and giving small treats; he eventually calmed down and was pretty good. I recommend getting the set of combs - I think it is around $15 - I only got a 1 inch and 3/4 inch, but I wish I had some shorter/longer ones too! :)

Yes, I bought the set of multiple combs and the small round grooming table as well. I spent $200 - but I think it will be very useful. :D

btw if you buy Oster products you can get 15% rebate from manufacturer on all purchases over hundred bucks.
the form its on the yorkietalk and also on their official oster website.
My oster golden 5 is coming as well. I only got number 10 and number 40 blades with combs set (7 of them).
As far as i understand combs work with number 40 blade. Is that right?
