Ear Hair Loss 3 Attachment(s) This isnt really a grooming question but I guess I will ask anyway... I may need this in the health/diet section. Anyway... I noticed yesterday that Sophie is loosing her hair at the tip of her ears. Here is a pic to show. She used to have hair all the way up and falling over like the rest of it. Any ideas of what might be causing this? I havent changed her diet or bathing products    Her skin actually looks dry & flaky   |
Her ears look very dry, what kind of shampoo do you use? |
I am going though this with Roxy for the past year. She used to have flakey ears like that (she still has flakey edges) - but anyway, now I make sure that I rinse her above and beyond the normal. And when I blow dry her, I make sure to dry her ears all the way and I comb that hair back off her ears, b/c it seems that when I would let that air dry kinda flat to her ears is when they would flake - does that make sense? Also, I just came back from the Vet due to her itching like crazy. He said she has a mild staph and yeast infection. Is she itching? |
The same thing I have always used, Sauve. But I dont think I get it on her ears much when washing. ??? I am just not a, spend alot of money on shampoo, person. Not even for us  |

Actually... I did quit using the Sauve shampoo and for the past 5-6 baths I have used Out! Natural Pet Shampoo & Sauve conditioner. The Sauve conditioner has Ammonium Laureth Sulfate & the ingredients on the shampoo are: Purified water, natural blends of oats, coconut oil and sugar-derived cleansers, glycerin, preservative, Vitamin E, Vitamin B-5 and natural raspberry fragrance. |

All I was using was Minksheen shampoo & No conditioner. And I rinse her very, very well. Since she has a yeast and staph infection now, I am using a Vet shampoo, and still no conditioner. |
I may have to break down & get me some Minksheen. I had been thinking about it but THIS may just be my breaking point. |
Angi,, go to touchofmink.com and request a sample,, they'll send it right out,, you'll have it in just a few days,, we love it, doggie shampoos and people shampoos have very different PH qualities,,,we also like LambertKay shampoos:animal-pa |
ear Looks like a touch of leather ear...use rubbing alcohol to clean and remove any built up oils..it will come off as a black gunk if it is leather ear...and the skin will be very clean and pink...then the hair will regrow...good luck |

That's what I was thinking, the beginnings of leather ear. Usually only dogs with a silky coat get it and sometimes it is brought on by being in cooler temperatures. Teri Shumsky suggested A1 All Systems Tea Tree Oil and Lotrimin 1%. It sure worked with my little guy that came to me with leather ear. See this site: http://www.shooterdog.com/alexfaq3.htm Also more sites listed here: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&s...ear%22&spell=1 Hope this helps. |

well goodness,, yep,, i'd go to a good doggie shampoo for em,, and you'll be surprised at the difference in Rustys coat too,, I ordered a gallon (while its on sale) of Minksheen after trying their sample Lambert Kays smell better,, but really like how well Minksheen works too,,,hope you have yours soon!:) |
Lula's ears looked exactly like this... I was using standard puppy shampoo (can't remember the name) but after her 1st trip to the groomer they have been looking great ever since! My home also has "forced air" for heat and the vet said that can contribute to her dry skin. The vet also recommended not bathing her as much to let her natural oils help out and to use an oatmeal based dog shampoo. I did reserach online when Lu had this issue and it looked like it could also be ear mites or dust mites so you may want to check out some of those pictures to see if it resembles that. |
Well, I got my minksheen and Sophie's coat is soft... but I think it will take a few times to see if it will help her dry ears .... we will see  |
