legs How do you cut the hair on their legs? Do you use a clipper or a shears? I can't seem to get it to look nice, just choppy.:( |
I was just about to ask the same thing. I can never get it perfect. I use scissors. Mine always look choppy too. Hopefully someone can help. |
I use clippers and it ends up looking yucky too. |

The biggest suggestion I can give you all is to scissor or clipper the direction the hair grows to get a nicer finish...Never cut across the hair or it will be choppy!...Never scissor a dirty dog...Scissor after a bath and a through blow dry to get hair to lay as smooth as possible and your end results should be better! ~Laura |

Thought it is just me. I never get the leg part right. It is sometimes choppy, sometimes his different legs has different lengths lol. |
I comb the hair to the side (back of each leg) hold between my fingers and cut straight down. This works real well, and doesn't look choppy. |

I just recently cut Mojo's (before his bath) and I think he turned out good. I just cut his legs w/ the scissors and they did not turn out too chompy. I also do the "hairdresser" hold/cut...holding some between my fingers and then cutting at an angle. I also use scissors on his belly too....I just pull the hair up and cut pretty close to the skin...course, Mojo loves to be on his back and for me to be messing w/ him....and he does not care for the clippers...so this works well for us! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=124064 |

The scissors should be pointing downward toward the floor when scissoring legs...If you stand the dog on the table, hold one front foot up in the air, comb hair toward back of leg and trim it off to the desired length it will then give you a line to go by for the rest of the leg... On the back legs hold one back leg up in the air and slightly extend the leg behind the dog, comb hair toward the front leg and trim as you did the front leg... This is very difficult to explain...hope you all get the idea! |

when cutting with scissors, when you hold the hair between you fingers to the side. Sometimes I find myself holding at an angle (particular attempting to cut my childs hair) Are you always suppose to hold it straight out at a 90 degree angle like? Do I mess up when I hold the hair in between at a 45 degree angle? |
It's really hard to hold a dog's leg up and hold the hair between two fingers and cut with the other hand!!! Do you guys have three hands?:rolleyes: Do any of you use a clipper on the legs? If you do, like someone said, just go down the leg and that's it or do you have to touch it up with a shears too? |

Cutting hair on legs When you hold the hair to the side (back of each leg) do you hold it at a 90 degree angle? I try to cut Sara's leg hair that way and it does look choppy. When you cut the legs short keep in mind that it looks WAY better on a cotton coat :) |
I use the clippers on Gracie's legs and go from the top of the leg to the bottom in the direction the hair grows. You always want to clip in the direction the hair grows. You can do a rough cut before the bath (be sure you brush them first) and then follow-up after their bath with your final cut. Then if need, I touch up with curved shears and also use the shears on her feet. I finally broke down and bought a pair of curved shears and I find with Gracie's coat they make it look less choppy. |
legs Sara Jane has a cotton coat. I have tried using clippers on her legs. She is only 3 3/4 pounds and I find that the attachment comb is HUGE on her little legs. I do cut down in the direction that the hair grows. It doesn't do a nice job at all. What size comb do you use when you clip Gracies legs? |
I use a #10 comb which is 1 1/4 inch. |
