Desperately Need Grooming Advice Please! Hi everyone. I could use some serious advice on grooming. Little Ralphie is 4 months old and I have been grooming him myself about once a week until recently. His skin has started to flake really bad so I started washing him every week 1/2 but that didn't help either. I have been using an oatmeal shampoo for sensitive skin and I really have no idea what I am doing! He is such a typical little boy: always messy and dirty, I don't even know how he gets so dirty, he is not an outside dog! I have been using the puppy wipes in between baths but it is such a chore because he fights me the whole time trying to eat them. Also, his coat is really dull and sooo tangled. The vet said that the dullness could also be due to the 2 parasites that he recently got rid of (poor baby, he has been on medication since I bought him). Anyway, I guess what I am trying to ask in a very rambling way is...What shampoo/conditioner do you think would be best, how often should I bathe him, what works best between baths and what combs/brushes should I use? Wow, sorry for the long post. I just feel so alone, I am so new at this!! Thank you!! |
Awwww your not alone. We have all been there. Thank heavens for YT because most of us have learned what we know from it. What is your babies diet? That really plays an important role in the coat. How does he get dirty if he's not outdoors? I have never used the wipes, I was always afraid they would dry out the skin. He's still a puppy so a really good puppy shampoo and conditioner should work well. I know many don't like it but I used Johnson's baby shampoo on my Buddy until he was around 10mos old. His coat was always shinny and soft. If it was good enough for my babies it was good enough for him. I loved the results. I bathe him every two weeks and he has never had an order to him. I hope this info helps you. |
Thank you so much! I have been feeding him Royal Canin for puppies. He always seems to find ways to get dirty: he spills his water and rolls around in it on the floor in his pen, he lies on his wee wee pads after he has used them (gross I know). No matter what I do he is just never very clean, thats why it is so hard for me not to wash him at least once a week. Thanks for the advice, good to know I have help now! |
I have used Johnson's baby shampoo on Murfee since I got him 4 years ago. Good luck with your little guy. I don't use the wipes either. |
Hi! I use the baby shampoo only on the face area. On this site I learned about Minksheen shampoo. I bought it online and Remi has been free of tangles ever since. Your pup is young and does not have his adult hair yet either. Also, if you are home when your pup drinks his water or uses his wee wee pad, remove them immediately. I found that outdoor housebreaking is really the best all around. It takes many many many trips outdoors and many many months of patience, but in the long run, I wouldn't have it any other way. Good luck and enjoy your beautiful pup! |
Shampooing alone is not enough. First get a slicker brush and get the tangles out. Next buy som Omega 3,6 & 9 gel cap (it's all in one) and put 10 drops in his food once a day. Then use a very watered down shampoo and rinse extremely well then mix a hot oil (like VO5) into his conditioner and massage all over the coat then rinse. Once a month just give him the hot oil treatment alone after his bath, wrap in a warm towel for 15 minutes. Make sure you use a pin brush and brush him every day. |
Hello, I have been using pantene shampoo and conditioner. The one with the extra shine formula. and a baby shampoo like the lavender Milk baby bath. This is what I used on my human babies and just liked the smell and it is supposed to help calm too. But their are other scents also. Up to you of course. And for the knots I have been using a slicker brush. Boy with the pantene and that slicker brush the knots just slide right out for me. I love it Its better than the other pet brands I have tried while I was grooming before in my shop. But thats just my openion. Good luck with your puppy. Tracy |
