help! my yorkie hair is dull Hi, I just got my first yorkie this weekend. She is not a puppy she is about a year and a half. Her hair is not to long but it is kind of dull looking. I would like to get her hair shinny and longer. I have read that it is not good to use human shampoo and conditioner on a yorkie hair, but I have also read were some people have used it. I read in one place can not find the website now were this breeder used panten on her yourkie. What is the best product and why can you use Human Shampoo and Conditioner. |
Well Gytana , I have heard all the same things about shampoo and conditioner. To tell the truth I have used both human and dog products ( on the dogs that is, not on me !) Results varied depending on the product and my dogs particular coat. SO... I currently like Pantene shampoo and conditioner , Johnsons no more tears shampoo ( these are the human products ) and plush puppy shampoo and conditioner ( these are the pet products, I should mention that the better quality dog shampoos are only available for me by mail order and they tend to be more expensive so I have tried more human shampoos with good results ) Don't know if this helped you any ! The reason you should not use human products exclusively is that human hair and skin has a higher acidity ph than a dogs and so does shampoo that is made for humans. the acid in the shampoo will help seal the cuticle of the hair but if used constantly can also cause brittleness of the hair and flaking of the skin. Rotate shampoo and you should get good results. You'll find that a professional quality human shampoo and conditioner will give your dog excellent shine, just watch the temp on the blow dryer. |
Thank you, that was very helpful. I did buy her a pet shampoo for now until I can get her a better one. I do know that her previous owner was using human conditioner on her and would brush her hair when dry, I did noticed that she has some split ends . Not a lot, but enough. what can I use for her slipt end and where can i find the product. |
Lipiderm or Linatone Lipiderm or Linatone is excellent for dogs hair. It can be bought in liquid form and can be mixed in with dog food. Petco or PetSmart carry it. I have used both of them and I prefer to use Lipiderm because the dogs don't seem to taste it in their food, although, I think Linatone works better. |
I would also add that what you feed her will contribute to her coat luster, or lack of it. It all starts on the inside. If they are not getting the proper nutrients it can affect the coat. |
Pet Silk has done wonders for my baby's coat... give it a try! |
Her previous owner was feeding her purina kibble ( small breeds). I have been giving her the same brand of food because i did not want to change her diet in fear that she would get sick. As a treat for dinner i give her a bit of cooked ground beef ( plan). I have also read that missinglink is good for the coat. what do you think??? |
