brushing coat I just read on Alex's Yorkie Care that you should never brush a dry coat. I have to brush Tricksie everyday. Is this true. |
You never brush a dry coat and never comb a wet coat. If you are going to brush, use some sort of spray to dampen it first. There are many to choose from. |
Yes, you shouldn't brush a dry coat, it breaks the ends. What sprays does everyone use? Can you recommend a few as they aren't always available over here? Does anyone make up their own mixture to spray? Some of the old Yorkie books I have, from the very early days when the breed was being developed over here, mention these, but there are some really weird recipes in them...... hydrous wool fat, benzoate lard, grains of phenol,alcohol......or oils mixed with kerosene & a little paraffin...... :( |
Can you use the no more tangles stuff you use for kids? |

What's wrong with combing a wet coat? |
So confused? Help me...I wondered that too?:aimeeyork |
 What? :questione Either I am real tired or that didn't make a lick of sense...I tried it that way...ended up with tons of matting! |
I think combing a wet coat will actually stretch it and do damage. You can lightly spray a conditioning mixture first then brush starting from the ends of the hair and work up to the root. |
O wow! I had no idea you aren't supposed to brush a dry coat! Do I just need to buy like a spray-on detangler? |
I just started using Chris Christensen Ice on Ice because Angel tangles so darn much. It has made a difference, but what I think the biggest difference is was investing in a good brush. I was doubtful that it would make such a HUGE difference, but the CC Fusion brush is to die for!!!! It is also anti-static which is good for Angel's tangly hair and it really does increase the shine on both of them tremendously. I'm going to get the CC comb next. For the smell, I like Buddy Spalsh spray on conditioner, it just doesn't detangle very well. |

LOL...I've got a really old yorkie book written by Annie Swan and it recommends washing with "soap flakes", cracked me up! I use Crown Royale finishing spray for in between bath grooming. I don't know if it's available there or not. You can use watered down hair conditioner (any brand you prefer) and it will work as well as anything else. About combing a wet coat? I've never heard that before and am curious....how could combing stretch wet hair anymore than brushing wet hair does? |
I use a new Coat Conditioner, Detangler & Revitalizing Spray. It's called NuHemp botanicals. www.kicxnutrition.com I love the stuff. I purchased it at PetValu. :D |
I think they may be rethinking how to handle the coat of the yorkie. In the #3 issue of Yorky Club Magazine in the article discussing coat care it discusses how fragile the hair is when in a wet state and suggests that you not brush or comb the coat until it is at least half way dry. I know as a stylist we are very careful with wet hair, we finger comb it as it drys. For my Yorkies I pick out matts before the hair is wet, wash, dab with a towel until excess moisture is absorbed and than finger comb while drying at a low heat. If you must comb when wet use a wide toothed comb that is very smooth. If you must brush use a natural boar bristle brush on a dry coat, lightly misting the brush with conditioner. Except for the fact that their hair is not as acidic as ours the two are very similar and really should be treated the same. |
