What do I need to do with my yorkie? Okay I need some help!!!! I have 4 new yorkies! I got my little male groomed at the groomers because he was AWFUL!!!! One of my little two of my little females is perfect, but the Gi-gi on the other hand is not! I could take her to the groomers but I don't want to I want to do it myself...I have everything a groomer needs(clippers, conditioner, scissors, etc) Her hair is soooo course!!!! I wish I could post a picture but I don't have them developed...Her body is great, but she is really matted around her behind and on the back of her neck..I can even get them combed out..so do I need to cut her down and then go from there or what??? |
If the mats are right to the skin then shaving down from a professional groomer would probably be the best..when they get to a certain point..its like a point of no return without a ton of pain..much easier to start again from scratch.. Dawn |
It isn't matted to the skin so what now? |
If you feel confident enough to clip her hair then go for it..trim off the mats first and make sure you can comb through it after the mats are gone..how short do you want to go?? Find a setting on the clippers that is the length you want and start clipping..you can scissor around the face and paws though..maybe see if you can find a grooming video online..like youtube or something like that..maybe she just needs a little trim with scissors but will probably need to be evened out after you trim out the mats..a good conditioner is a must when trying to get the mats out...IF you want to try to comb them out.. Dawn |
Do you have a slicker brush? i couldn't live without mine. Also, go to southern states and get some CowBoy Magic. It is in a tube and lasts forever. Put a dime size of this on the tips of your fingers and rub it directly into the matts. Leave it on for a few minutes and them use your wide tooth metal conmb and see if you can comb them out or the slicker brush. |
I use a dematting comb |
Thank you guys so much!!!! |
Wow you took on 4 new yorkies at one time? did you get them from a rescue group? It sounds like you have your handsfull with the grooming. I agree sometimes it is just best to cut it all off and start over. |
You can take a pair of scissors and cut the mat parellel with the legs. (my spelling is terrible tonight.) In other words split the mat lengthwise not across. This way you have a smaller area to work with and you should have better luck. Just keep splitting and working out the mats. The lubrications work well, but they can also be a tab greasy. Brush for about 10-15 minutes and let the dog rest for awhile. It may take a couple days or more, but you can do it. |
You can get some detangler through petedge.com called "THE STUFF" it is wonderful!! |
