What do to with my Yorkie's hair? Molly (my yorkie) has thick, soft hair. She doesn't have the silk hair that most yorkies have. I was reading somewhere that if you have a yorkie with this type of hair it's better to keep them with a 'puppy cut' to avoid grooming frustration for the animal and owner. :( She is so pretty with some longer hair. She looks scrauny(sp?) and not like my Molly when she is short. She recently had puppies, and they did matt her hair so badly that I shaved her instead of making her go through all the grooming for the mats. Wondering if anyone has a yorkie like mine? And what do you do about grooming? She is 5lbs, and like a said she looks super scrauny when shaved. Her hair does grow pretty rapidly though. :) So we only have to deal with the short hair for awhile, but still..... TIA for any help. Blessings, Christy |
4 Attachment(s) I just had my Abbie cut short today. I would say she has silky hair except her eyes definitely glow red not green. It's a little shorter than I wanted it on her body, but hopefully as it grows out a bit it will look better. I show her photo because she is very scrawny as well. She's 4 pounds 9 oz but taller than my other girl who is 1 oz. more so looks much thinner. Anyway, just showing you a skinny girl cut short! |

She looks adorable! With my Molly I would have to even trim her leg hair as it also mats pretty badly :( Of coase it's worse now since she had puppies, and has been laying alot, and having pups crawl on her. I will try to post pics soon. Blessings, Christy |

To me, this is the hair that mats so badly and is soooo hard to keep brushed out. Then you still have a thick layer starting at the topline, down to within an inch or two to the belly. This layer can grow long, and is thick enough to cover the belly so you don't see how short it is, but still thin enough you can brush every other day and keep mats down. I like this because you can still have that Yorkie "look" of longer hair, but not have to deal with so much of it. Also I have found that using plenty of conditioner, even sometimes a light spray of leave in conditioner works well. I'm not sure this is making sense? lol |
I have one that has hair like that too. I got so tired of the matts that I did shave her down. It is just so much easier than trying to brush her so much every day. She looks pretty cute in a short cut. I have tried SO many different conditioners and shampoos and oils... non of them really seem to help. They make her hair nice and soft but don't really help with matting. I just enjoy the longer hair on my other two.:) |
i have a cotton coat as well. i shave her down every couple of months when her hair gets to about 3 inches long. it starts to mat at this point. just easier for both of us to keep her short. |
1 Attachment(s) Talk about green, glowing eyes, check out my Rowdy. This is a picture of him with his big sister, Pixie. Rowdy is 11 months, we're not sure how old Pixie is because she is a puppy mill rescue. We estimate her to be about six. |
