Grooming Questions! me and my sister want to grow out our babies hair.... my baby seems to have more of the wiry, thin hair.. and her baby has the puffy hair.. we just saw the dog show today and the long hair looks so pretty!!! anyway.. my question is.. is it hard to maintain long hair? and what exactly do i need to do? this is our first time thinking of doing this.. and we are willing to be dedicated.. we just need some help that's all =] please help me out.. any thoughts or comments or advice would be helpful... thank you!! |
coats I think you will have an easier time then your sister...a thinner coat that is wiry will not mat for the most part...but it will also not grow as easily..some break and never get floor length. A thicker coat takes more time and patience.. Use a good shampoo and conditioner, spritize it with water from a spray botle and brush/comb it daily...be sure to prevent fleas and scratching... The coats you see on show dogs is ususally wrapped or oiled to prevent mats and breakage... |
I LOVE LOVE LOVE full-length coats. Lacy's coat is coarser than it should be and has never grown very quickly. I added fish oil/vit. E to her diet in October and that has helped with hair growth some. Long coats do take extra work...you've got to keep them clean and keep them combed well, but I think it is so worth it. |
I agree I love the long hair... I can not wait to get a female one day that has long hair! |
My babies have long hair, I bathe them at least once a week. I use Aussie Moist shampoo and 3 minute miracle conditioner. I know there are probably better shampoos, but these smell so nice and I use them on my human babies as well. I blow dry them and comb them using a light mist of a doggie detangler I got a PetCo. It smells so wonderful and makes them just shine! Zoe gets a top-knot, Zorak has a middle part and we trained his hair to lay out of his eyes... it looks cute so far. I trimmed the hair straight across level with the hocks... just to even out the ends and make it look more 'polished'. I took them to PetSmart for their grooming, but they CUT the hair when I specifically said NO CUTTING! I was more than mildly irritated, so now I will do it myself! I leave the toe trimming to the vet for now and the teeth I do myself and let the vet scrape twice a year. Anal glands have not needed to be done yet. That is all I know so far about grooming. |
wow.. thanks everyone.. i think i can deal with it.. me and my sister both do our puppies hair by ourselves.. meaning the cutting and trimming and whatnot.. my baby is just a little younger so it's harder to control him.. he fidgets a lot i like to use baby shampoo and regular conditoner.. i use the baby shampoo because it's tear free.. and it smells nice.. it seems the most gentle.. |
Mine all have long hair. I wash them every week, it doesn't mat so much when it's clean & silky. I use a moisturising shampoo followed by human hair conditioner & blow them dry, brushing to get any tangles out. I brush them every day using a pure bristle brush & a small amount of coat dressing. |
ALot of time genetics have alot to do with how much and quaility of hair your dog is going to grow |

Sometimes some dogs hair just doesnt grow like you see in the dog show ring. I have a yorkie here whos hair just doesnt grow more then halfway and I have tried everything to get a full coat on her but it just isnt going to happen. YOu have to know whats in your dogs background. Sometimes the best grooming products, food, etc just isnt going to get the hair to grow floor length. Im not saying this is going to happen to your dog but sometimes the hair just will never get down to the floor, |

I also love the long coats and I am going to let Rascal's hair grow. I am excited to hear that there are so many people out there willing to put the time and effort into maintaining a beautiful Yorkie coat. So many people cut them because it is easier. I do not like yorkies that have a schnauzer cut (my personal opinion.) |

Like someone mentioned before, growing show coat almost always involves oil and wraps--trust me, my dog is in them 24/7. The hair is oiled to make it more elastic, in combination with the wraps it is less prone to matting/breakage. What most dont realize is that so many things break coat--carpet, pet "deodorant" sprays, grass, scratching, urine, concrete...the list goes on and on. If growing a show coat is something you are really serious about there is a lot of VERY helpful advice on this board. Don't give up! :) It is very labor intensive at first and takes time to get it down right. Depending on how tall the dog is, it usually takes around 18 months (sometimes longer) to completley grow to the floor. The ironic thing is that there are so many people who want to grow out their dogs hair to show length and I cant wait for my boy to finish so I can shave it off and finally let him be a dog! :D |
