Yorkie terrified of groomer! Our Sadie is almost 2. She is between 8-9 lbs. We have been asked not to return to 3 differenr groomers-so far. She is the sweetest girl in the world,but when she gets groomed, she turns into satan (as the groomers call her). She barks, growls, hisses, nips, scratches & literally tries to crawl into your clothes. It takes 4 people to hold her down, & usually 1-2 hrs. for the grooming! When she is done, you can feel her sweating thru her skin! We have tried herbal, vet given relaxers,nothing has helped. We give her a puppy cut, but than we, as well as her, are so tramatized after the grooming, we leave her grow out again. Than we we make another appt., they ask us to look elsewhere. She hates being brushed at home. It takes 3 of us to do this. We have tried at home grooming, but when we were done, it looked so bad, I just cried! Anybody have any other suggestion that we have not tried? We are desperate!!! |
Is there some kind of sedative you could give her before she gets groomed? I don't know if there are, but mabe you could ask your vet? |
They just had a segment on Dog whisperer the other night with one like that(not a yorkie)..Has she ever been hurt by a groomer? Have you had her since she was a puppy? Something is really scaring that poor baby..Talk to the vet and see if he can give you a sedative to calm her down before taking her in..the ones I had my shih tzu on usually worked within about 1/2 hour.. |
your poor pup... i feel bad for her.. it must be hard to be that anxious and not have any other way to tell them that she is upset... Layla used to go to the groomer and came home just a mess... she was shaking.. it was horrible.. i realized the problem wasn't her... but the people grooming... so i do it myself now... at first the cost is high for a clipper and combs and scissor but when you think about it.. the one time cost is better than the 50 dollars each time and having her come back so upset. good luck.. if you need help with grooming yourself... msg me and i'll be happy to help :) |
Hi-We have tried sedatives, 2 differnet kinds, & they have had no effect. We have had her since she was 7 wks. old. After the first grooming, the ladies said she was very difficult. Both the groomers are in there 50"s and have been doing this for over 30 yrs! |
I'm a dog groomer and we did a lot of lessons on dogs that behave just like that. She may simply just be scared of the grooming atmosphere. I'd introduce her slowly to one groomer. Go once just to meet the groomer, go back another day and do bathing, then go again and try to do the full grooming. Not all groomers would go for this. If they care enough the would and if you were in my area I would gladly work with you. I would call around and see if anyone is willing to work with you. It can't hurt to just ask. :) |
Poor little Sadie! I'm not sure if it would help but there are a few mobile pet grooming companies around here that can come to your house and groom your pup at home. Maybe the more familiar atmosphere will help calm her down. |

Thanks for all replys! I have tried to locate a mobile groomer in our area w/no luck. We live in a far north suburb of Chicago. We tried the "going to meet & greet", than going to just "smell" around, than the bath, etc. results are still the same! Even, today, we are taking her for just a nail clip, which I know she also hates. My husband has to go into the grooming area to hold her,last time she bit him, which she never does! She also never barks, but this happens at the groomers,also. |
Why put her through such torment, to her it's terror. Learn how to groom yourself. It's really not so hard. Buddy was groomed until last June. He deceided for whatever reason he was not going anylonger and bit the groomer. I was not going to sedate him. So I had no choice. Several of YT'ers have learned to groom thenselves because of this reason. If I can help you and several more here would be happy to just ask. |

Could you possibly talk to a groomer and see if they would let you stay as they worked on her. Maybe having you there would make her feel more comfortable. |
I don't have any advise as I haven't taken mine to a groomer yet. She is only 4mths old so doesn't really need full grooming. I do everything at home and the first time I tried to clip her, it was horrible! Please remember that the hair will always grow back LOL That is what I keep in mind. I also do alot of the brushing and combing while she is sleeping on my lap. This makes it a relaxing thing for her and now she goes to sleep when I comb her. Hope you find something that works for you and good luck.:) |
Chewy was very fearful and would bite and snarl... a lot of it was the groomers. I stayed at pet smart and saw them holding him down. We were both tramatized and I decided to groom myself. it took a long time for him to trust me with scissors and combs, and tooth brush!!! I would do a little every single day. for nails I went to a groomer I found that I liked and we would both hold him and he wore a muzzle. The muzzle calmed him down believe it or not. He knew he couldn't bite and so he just allowed the nail clipping. he is one and a half years old now and sits still and calm for me. He doesn't like it but he lets me do what ever I need to with no muzzle. the vet trims his nails. ;) |
