Help Needed with Nail Clipping
 
Is there any good way to know how far down to clip without hurting my boy?

The other dogs I've had have had clear nails, so it's easy to see where the quick is. I've never clipped a dog with black nails, so any advice at all would be welcome.

i just ordered a dremel from petedge.com and until then i use a nail file with 160 grit

I hate cutting nails! Start off cutting a small section at a time..just a sliver. When you cut the nail, you'll see that it is white on the inside. When you keep cutting, you'll eventually see a black dot in the center of the white..this is the end of the quick. So you stop there.

Thanks, ladies! Will there be any curve at all when I reach that point, or will a nail be pretty straight once it's clipped properly?

It will still be curved. Lacy has pretty long quicks

This is about the best way. I hate cutting nails also. Filing sometimes works but Ellie has cried a couple times if I file too far.

Yeah, I definitely prefer the dremmel. Lacy is so bad about her nails though. I always hold her while someone files them for me. She struggles way too much

Gus is pretty good about nail clipping, with some help from tiny pieces of Pup-a-roni. A bit of junk food goes a long way for grooming with him!

I'm brand new here. I was searching for information on hair grooming and nail clipping. My Londons nails have never been cut because she goes NUTS. I feel very quilty about this. Someone told me that now her quick will be right close to the edge and I need to go real slow. The filing sounds like a better option for me. What is a dremmel?

If you look at the backside of the nail it is kinda hollow down to the quick (vein in the nail)...The hollow part ends right at the curve in the nail...If you clip the nail right at the point where this hollow area stops you should miss the quick...Always have some quick stop on hand to stop any bleeding should you happen to hit the quick...I much prefer the scissor type nail clippers...It is much easier to see where and what you are doing...

I take Tricksie to the Vet. Her nails are solid black and I will not take a chance on cutting. It is not expensive.
Thanks for the tips on filing them. She lets me do most anything to her.
