A hair question S'anah's hair is beautiful. It is silky and smooth, has never gotten matted, it has gotten the occasional tangle on her butt and back feet, but with very little effort they just comb right out. Now for the bad part - Her hair is so THIN! I mean honestly, I see the babies on here with their beautiful top knots and I pull the Poopanut's up and its this really thin puny little thing. Do ya'll think her hair will thicken up? She is 9 1/2 months old now. Do you think if I take her in and have it cut that it will help it thicken up somewhat? Honestly I would love to have her cut in one of those adorable puppy cuts (with the top left long enough for a topknot), but her hair is so thin I don't think it would look full and adorable the way it does on other yorkies. |

Riddick's hair was very thin when he was young, and he'll be 3 in Feb. And it's still Very Thin!!!!.. I wish his would have thickened up but never did..:( |
Dunno... Im wondering if there are any pet products that would assist with your problem??? I dont know of any, but I'd look into that as an option... |
I think Susanah, Lucy, and Riddick all look like they have nice coats! I don't know if there is anything you can do to thicken up the coats or not - maybe some kind of mineral or vitamen in their food like Missing Link? I heard that's good, though I've never tried it myself. I heard my handler telling another person in our class to use some kind of Cholesterol product that is used for people of ethnic background. You just rub it into the coat, not the skin, and comb through. It doesn't get rinsed out. They have some that is good for breakage and some for growing. Maybe that'll help, I don't know, just throwing it out there for your info. |
Have You Tried Missing Link I Was Told It Might Help |
Genetics play a big part in the outcome of your pups coat...We have had them with very fine silky coats as pups and then they thicken up by the time they are two years old...It is going to be a wait and see game...If her hair is very fragile you may have to baby it some...It may be breaking off if she likes to rub or roll around alot...Your breeder should be able to tell you what to expect with her coat! |
Lacy has a thin topknot. It has always been thin and she's three now. |
Bella also has very thin hair, it is very easy to maintain and is silky. I've been thinking about giving her a puppy cut and leaving her face and head longer too but have the same worry as you do. I really don't think her hair is breaking I think it is just how it is, I hope it does thicken up some as she gets older. I keep holding on to this quote about their coats in the sticky post of the general forum Quote:

Izzy is the same...love that it's silky and doesn't matt much (just use a little Ice on Ice when she does get a small knot and it comes right out). But her hair is also so darn thin. She's almost 13 months old and I don't see it getting any thicker...maybe we'll get some responses from the breeders or show people. ;) |
My sisters baby has very thin hair to, she is 4mths, I keep telling her it should grow in, oops maybe not huh, I tryed to get a top knot in her hair with no luck, Its so thin on top you can see her head?? Hoping someone has some solutions;) or tips:) I can share with her. |
Ruby's coat is also very silky and thin. I've been told it's because she has a more fragile silk hair type, that is most likely breaking. Even playing and rubbing on carpet will break this type of hair. It's not likely to actually get thicker because of genetics. So, the best I can do is keep it in good shape (clean and well conditioned, no overheating w/dryers) and possibly start wrapping for more protection. Supplements and diet, as with human hair will only help so much. If there is a deffiency in their diet they would most certainly help. Otherwise not so much, though you might see some benefit, in some cases. Lately the biggest problem with getting her coat to grow has been Reno - he is forever biting her hair!:( |
When I got Zoie she was very thin coat and it would always mat and tangle. So when she was very young I had her shaved. Looked terrible for a few wksn but then it come back and was better. But don't get me wrong its not full but its alot better. She always has enough for a topknot. |
My dog has worn his top fluff OFF My guy has fine hair on his head and now he looks like a short-haired dog. He sleeps under the blankets, so I think he is breaking it off. I'll watch to see if it regrowns in the summer. |
Tink has very thin hair too. She has what they call a cotton coat. I've decided to keep it short because she's a mix - Yorkiepoo and has just enough of the poodle curl to make it unruly when it gets longer. Her hair has gotten a little thicker the last few months, but it is still quite thin. She's 16 months. It's hard to tell if it will thicken. Time will tell I guess. |
Genetics I think it is all about the genetics. Shylah will be 2 in April and her coat is very thin and silky. It lays really nice, even around the face that she doesn't really need a top knot. All though she looks really cute with a barret in her hair, but she won't keep it in!! Starsky on the other hand has a thick coat but I don't put a top knot on him. I have his bangs cut and he has a lot of curly hair, that I can't let him get too long!! |
A lot does have to do with genetics. If they have great genes for a good coat - you can usually grow a coat. It should be silky and cool to the touch for a good silky coat - easy to grow. To help it grow to floor length we oil it and wrap it. But - if the dog does not have the good gene for a good coat - no matter what you do for it - the hair will not grow. Some yorkies have a terrier coat: short, bridle, rough to the touch. Some have cottony coats. Some have slow growing coats. Be careful with interpreting the Wildweir explanation to a pups growing coat - Quote:
This is why it is very hard to buy a good pup when the pup is young. The yorkshire terrier pup goes through many metamorphasis before it becomes an adult. It is mostly about genetics - this is why researching and learning is so important before purchasing. T. |
