What to use for dry/flaky skin? I was brushing my girls out today and notice that their skin is dry.... Brooklynn's is flaky and dry.. Bailey's is dry but hasn't flaked yet... I was using baby shampoo and pantene pro-v conditioner.. I bathe them between once a week and once every two weeks.. In the last few weeks they've been scratching more than normal and I think its be/c of their skin... What can I buy to get it back to normal?? Money isn't an issue! |
Bump I'm bumping this up because I'm having the same problem with Mr. Biggs. Due to the dry flakey skin, I've had to wash him more often than normal, brush out matts 24/7, and put him in full body pj's when I'm not at home to moniter his scratching/biting. He's taken to biting his booty because of the dry flakey skin, causing him to get scabs, and now that the scabs are healing, he's scratching even more! I've checked for fleas, done flea baths, and he's on flea prevention, so I know it isn't because of that (I haven't found any) I have some tablets to give him, but they're so big, and I don't like pouring it on his food, because he doesn't eat his food in one siting and I dont' want it to go bad :( Does anyone know of any natural remedies for the dry skin? *Last night I gave him a bath and sprayed on the JC coat conditioning spray while his hair was still wet, and his hair is so soft and his back half feels more moisturised :) |
My girls don't have fleas either (I'd throw up if they did) and my bf told me to try head and shoulders but I'm not bathing them again if its just going to dry them out even more... I'm thinking its from our weather being freezing cold, then being 50 degrees, then going cold again... Not sure..But I feel like I'm making them suffer... :( |
My groomer suggested salmon oil, but I have not tried it yet. I don't blow dry Punkin's hair unless its really cold and I need to. I think that blow drying contributes to the problem. I treat coat problems from the inside out. Take a good hard look at the food you are feeding -- read the label. See if it contains any of the common allergens -- corn, wheat, etc. You might consider a change of food to a more "dog friendly" one and give a good coat supplement. What works for me (and has for over two years ) is Canidae all life stages. I supplement Chattie with several drops of emu oil daily - she is my dry coat problem child. I use MinkSheen shampoo and then after baths while still soppy wet, put several drops of that same emu oil in my hands, rub them together and massage it through her coat. This has worked miracles for me! And the added benefit is that I wind up with softer than soft hands! Note: It will take a good six months or so to see much of an improvement when changing foods.... so be paitent. :D |
I have the same problem with Tessa. I know it is because it is winter here. I was wondering if anyone has tried Tea Tree oil? In a bottle with some leave-in conditioner. I think I am going to give it a try. There is some in both her shampoo and her rinse out conditioner. |

Otis gets very dry and itchy. I've decided he gets worse after baths. So, I'm stretching the time out in between baths. I've already got him on good allergy food. Also, he gets missing link every evening. I also started giving him a vitamin E capsule once daily. |
Adding fish oil to their food makes a huge improvement in the skin and coat. You can add a capsule of 1000mg fish oil to the food each day. Make sure you start out sparing and build your way up to a full capsule as you dont want to give your pup the runs. Also, avoid freqent bathing as this tends to dry out the skin even more. When you do bathe them, make sure you are using a dog formulated shampoo like Petsilk, as the PH in human shampoos is different and is more drying. |
well i got some samples of canidae all life stages and cody LOVED it so i went to the local pet store and got a 5 lb bag. so hopefully we're going to start to see an improvement in his coat! |
