Short Haircut w/ Silky hair?? I need some opinions on cutting a Yorkie with silky hair into a puppy cut. I read that it only works with cotton coats, as the silky hair does not look good cut shorter, but Tucker's hair is touching the ground when he goes outside, and with winter here, the snow and debris is getting caught in his coat. Anyone have a Yorkie with silky hair AND short hair?? Pictures would be appreciated also!! Thanks in advance! |
I dont have a silky haired Yorkie, however, I would say just go for it. Do what you think looks good on your pup... His hair will always grow back :) |

I'm in the same boat. Zoe's hair is silky and I'm wanting to trim her up but not sure what to do. Would love to see photo's too. |
My sister keeps her yorkie cut very short. She is from my first litter and she has silky hair. It does look a little different as it does not puff out but she cuts the body very short. She does this because her girl goes everywhere outside with her, even through the wheat fields. She stays nice and comfortable and doesn't pick up all the debris along the way. Her girl looks adorable! Not much you can do to a Yorkie and they won't still look cute as a button! I say, give it a try, the worst that could happen is you don't like it and it grows out again. |
2 Attachment(s) Joey has silky hair and just got a new haircut with the body shaved and the leg hair longer, if you notice the foot hair is trimmed in such a way that it almost looks like he's wearing boots. :p I've also seen variations of this cut with the leg hair slightly shorter than what Joey has and it looks great too. |

1 Attachment(s) My shorty has a silky coat but it is fairly thick. I love this cut on him. This was taken several years ago at the groomers. |

2 Attachment(s) Harley also has a silky coat, but it's incredibly thick. Here is his short cut. I cut his back short in Feb and have let it grow since. The other picture is of him in June. I trimmed his face, legs, and feet, but let his back grow a little. |
Niyah has a silky coat and her hair is short. I am growing it long though but you can see her coat in the pictures in my album. |
My advice is to make sure that is what you want because remember on average it takes 13 mos to grow the coat out again. That to me is a long time for something that only takes a few minutes to cut off. I can't wait until Niyah's coat is long. I have only had her a month but I am anxious. |
